Materials Needed:

  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors

Granny Squares:

1

Start with Black Color:

  • Create a magic ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet).
  • Work 2 double crochets into the ring.
  • Chain 3.
  • (Work 3 double crochets into the ring, chain 3) repeat two more times.
  • Pull the magic ring closed.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3 to close the round.

Second Round (Still Black Color):

  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet).
  • In the next chain-3 space, work (3 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets).
  • Repeat for the remaining two corners.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3 to close the round.
  • Cut yarn and fasten off.

Third Round (Change to Red Color):

3

  • Join red yarn in any chain-3 corner space.
  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), work 2 more double crochets in the same space.
  • For each side, work 3 double crochets in the space between 3-double-crochet groups from the previous round.
  • In each corner chain-3 space, work (3 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets).
  • Repeat the process until the square is the desired size, changing colors to white and green as described in the video.

Triangles:

Start with Black Color:

  • Create a magic ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet).
  • Work 3 double crochets, chain 3, and then work 4 more double crochets into the ring.
  • Pull the magic ring closed.
  • Turn your work, chain 3, work 3 double crochets in the space formed by the chain 3 and the 3 double crochets. Then in the tip (chain-3 space), work (3 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets), and finish with 3 double crochets + 1 double crochet in the last space to form the other side of the triangle.

Additional Rounds (Change to Red, White, and Green as per the squares):

  • Repeat the process, following the color pattern from the scrap, adding rounds to increase the size of the triangle to match the halves of the squares when folded diagonally.

Assembly:

  • Lay out the squares and triangles on the floor to determine the placement.
  • Connect the squares and triangles using slip stitches with the green color on the wrong side.
  • Attach a border around the entire piece with the green yarn.
  • Add straps by chaining a specified number of chains and working slip stitches back for both the neck and back ties (neck tie: 200 chains, back ties: 150 chains each).

Finishing Touches:

  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Block the top if necessary to get the correct shape and size.
