How To Crochet Snowflake Hat & Cowl Pattern

This Crochet Snowflake Hat & Cowl pattern combines snowflake granny squares, seamlessly joined as you go, with ribbing worked in the round. It's designed for beginners, using basic stitches and post stitches for ribbing, suitable for a variety of bold colors.

  • Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn in Scarlet and White (worsted weight)
  • 9 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

One granny square is approximately 4.5".

  • BPdc: back post double crochet
  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • FPdc: front post double crochet
  • magic ring
  • rep: repeat
  • sl: slip
  • st: stitch

Pattern Instructions

Snowflake Granny Square

  1. Rnd 1: With White, start with a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, *ch 1, 3 dc in ring; rep from * 2 times, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch-3.
  2. Rnd 2: *Ch 6, (sl st, ch 6, sl st) in the next space; rep from * 3 times.
  3. Rnd 3 (Change to Red): Fold ch-6 loops down, *sl st in ch-1 space from the previous round, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in the same space; skip next ch-6 loop; rep from * 2 times, join with a sl st to top of ch-3.
  4. Rnd 4: Continue working over the loops, as established, fasten off.

Joining Granny Squares

  • As you crochet the last round of each granny square, leave one side open to join it to the adjacent square, forming a circle with five squares.

Adding Ribbing

  • Cowl: Add 3 rounds of ribbing on both sides.
  • Hat: Add 3 rounds of ribbing on one side and 8 on the other.

Finishing the Hat

  • To close, thread yarn through the last round of ribbing stitches and pull tight. Secure and add a large pom-pom on top.
