Versatile Crochet Cardigan Pattern From Short Styles To Long Layers

Make a cozy cardigan, perfect for any season, in just the length you love. Picture crocheting it yourself, stitch by stitch, crafting a unique piece that's all yours. Whether you dream of something long and flowing or short and sweet, it's all possible. With your own two hands, some yarn, and a crochet hook, you can bring to life a cardigan that's just right for you. It's not just about keeping warm; it's about injecting a bit of your own style and creativity into what you wear. Every loop and knot you make is a step closer to having a new favorite item in your wardrobe, one that tells a story of patience, skill, and personal flair.

Crochet Cardigan

Materials:

  • Yarn: Glitter Delight by Hobbii (50% acrylic, 49% cotton, 1% polyester, 100g skeins)
  • Hook size: 7mm
  • Other tools: Tape measure, stitch markers, yarn needle

Crochet Cardigan step 1

Stitches Used (US Terms):

  • CH: Chain
  • HDC: Half Double Crochet
  • DC: Double Crochet
  • HDC2tog: Half Double Crochet Two Together
  • SL ST: Slip Stitch

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measurements:

  • Take your bust measurement by wrapping a tape measure around the widest part of your bust. Add 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) to this measurement for an oversized, slightly baggy fit.

2. Foundation Chain:

  • Create a foundation chain that is half the total measurement from step 1. Add one extra stitch.

Example: If your total bust measurement is 100cm, create a chain to measure 50cm.

Crochet Cardigan step 2

3. Back Panel:

  • Row 1: Start in the second chain from the hook, HDC to the end. CH 1, turn.
  • Row 2: HDC in each stitch to the end. CH 1, turn.
  • Repeat Row 2 until the back panel measures from the hem to the nape of your neck. Fasten off.

4. Front Panels:

Crochet Cardigan step 3

Row 1: Create two front panels. Each panel should be 10 stitches narrower than half of the back panel (e.g., if the back panel was 50 stitches, each front panel will start with 40 stitches divided into two panels).

  • Rows 2-50: Follow the same pattern as the back panel, but make two separate pieces for the front panels.

5. Seaming Shoulders:

Crochet Cardigan step 4

  • Leave long tails when fastening off the front panels. Use the yarn tails or join new yarn if already cut. Align the front panels with the back panel, right sides facing each other, and seam the shoulders using SL ST or a yarn needle.

6. Seaming Sides and Armholes:

  • Measure and leave space for the armholes (suggested: 18 cm or 7 inches). Use stitch markers to mark this space.
  • Seam from the armhole markers down to the hemline using SL ST or a yarn needle

Crochet Cardigan step 6

7. Sleeves:

  • Join yarn at the armpit with a SL ST, CH 1. HDC evenly around the armhole.
  • SL ST to join at the end of the round, CH 1, turn.
  • Repeat: Continue HDC rounds until the sleeves reach the desired length. Remember to turn at the end of each round.

Crochet Cardigan step 7

8. Cuff Ribbing:

  • Once the sleeve length is complete, decrease stitches by working HDC2tog around.
  • Work 2-3 rows of ribbing: Row 1: DC in each stitch around, CH 3, turn. Row 2: Work front post and back post DC alternately. Row 3: Work front post and back post DC alternately in reverse from Row 2.
  • Fasten off.

9. Edging and Ribbing:

  • Join yarn at the bottom corner edge of the front opening.
  • Row 1: Work DC around the edging up one front panel, around the neck, and down the other panel.
  • Row 2 & 3: Repeat same front post and back post DC ribbing as on the cuffs.
  • Fasten off.

Crochet Cardigan step 8

10. Bottom Hem Ribbing:

  • Join yarn at the corner of the bottom hem.
  • Repeat same process for edging: Row 1: DC across the bottom hem. Row 2-3: Work front post and back post DC alternately.
  • Fasten off.

Crochet Cardigan step 9

11. Finishing:

  • Weave in all loose ends using a yarn needle.
  • Block your cardigan if needed.
