Finished Size

  • Newborn Size:
    • Length (top to bottom): 26cm
    • Sleeve Length: 24cm–25cm
    • Back Width: 22cm
    • Sleeve Opening Width: 9.5cm
  • 3-Month Size (made with slightly thicker yarn):
    • Slightly larger than the dimensions above.

Special Techniques

  1. Raised Stitches (Relief Stitches):
    • These stitches are used for texture and structure in certain rows of the pattern and create a ribbed, professional finish.
    • Raised Front Post Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook from the front around the post of the stitch, pull up yarn, and complete as a double crochet.
    • Raised Back Post Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook from behind, around the post of the stitch, pull up yarn, and complete as a double crochet.
  2. Fan Stitch:
    • 2 double crochet stitches, a chain stitch, and 2 double crochet stitches all worked into the same space.

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Starting Foundation Chains & Row 1

  1. Using a 3mm crochet hook, chain 74 stitches.
    • Leave a tail of yarn to finish off later.
  2. Skip the first 3 chains (counts as the first double crochet). In the 4th chain, make 11 double crochet stitches (1 stitch per chain).
    Save
  3. Chain 2, and in the next chain, make 15 double crochet stitches.
  4. Chain 2, and in the next chain, make 20 double crochet stitches.
  5. Chain 2, and in the next chain, make 15 double crochet stitches.
  6. Chain 2, and in the final section, make 11 double crochet stitches.

Note: This setup creates the front panels, sleeves, and back section.

Step 2: Row 2 (Fan Stitches)

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet) and turn your work.
  2. Skip the first two stitches and create a fan stitch (2 double crochets, 1 chain, 2 double crochets) in the third stitch.
    Save
  3. Skip 4 stitches and create another fan stitch in the 5th stitch.
  4. Repeat fan stitches until 2 stitches remain before the next chain-2 space.
  5. In the chain-2 spaces, create 2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets to form corner fans.

Repeat this for all sections:

  • Work fans across the front panel,
  • Create 4 fans for the back section,
  • Work fans for the second front panel.

Step 3: Rows 3–9

  • Alternate between rows of fan stitches and fan stitches with relief stitches:
    • For relief rows, pick up the two outermost stitches from the previous row's fan (using front or back raised double crochet stitches).
  • Continue increasing the number of stitches between corner fans by 2 in each subsequent row.

Once 9 rows are complete:

  • Ensure the corner fans have 16 total stitches each.
    Save

Step 4: Joining Sleeves and Body

  1. Fold the sleeve sections to the back and join the corners using slip stitches.
  2. Create fan stitches along the body, skipping over the joined sleeve sections.
    • Add 5 fans across the body for a slightly wider fit. For a narrower fit, only add 4 fans.
  3. Complete the row and continue working on the body.

Step 5: Body Rows

  • Continue working rows of fans and relief stitches until you complete 18 rows in total (or your desired jacket length).

Step 6: Front Edges & Buttonholes

  1. Using a 2.5mm hook, create a single crochet border along the front edges:
    • Ensure you add 54 stitches evenly along each edge.
  2. For the buttonholes:
    • On one side, work 24 single crochets, then chain 2 and skip 2 stitches for the first buttonhole.
      Save
    • Add 8 single crochets, then chain 2 and skip 2 stitches for the second buttonhole. Repeat for the third buttonhole. Finish with single crochets.

Step 7: Sleeves

  1. Place your yarn in a sleeve corner and create 11 fan stitches around the sleeve opening.
  2. Continue alternating between rows of fan stitches and relief stitches as described above.
  3. Work 17 rows for the sleeve length, then finish with a ribbed cuff:
    • Ribbed Cuff: Work 4 rows alternating between front and back post double crochets.
    • For the final row, work slip stitches along the cuff for a neat edge.
