Materials Needed:
- Crochet Hooks: Sizes vary depending on your bust size (For example, 4mm/G hook for 30-32 inch bust, 5mm/H hook for 34 inch bust, 5.5mm/I hook for 36 inch bust)
- Yarn: Premier Basics in Eggplant, Purple, and Lilac (Number 4 worsted weight, budget yarn)
- Yarn Needle (for weaving ends and assembling)
Pattern:
Starting the Granny Square:
Create a Slip Knot: Chain 2.
- Round 1: In the first chain, make 8 single crochets. Slip stitch to join to the first single crochet.
- Round 2: Chain 4 (counts as a double crochet and chain 1), double crochet into the next stitch, chain 1. Repeat around. After the last chain 1, slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain 4.
Expanding the Granny Square:
Round 3-onwards:
- Slip stitch over into the space, chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
- In the same space, put 2 more double crochets, chain 1.
- In the next space: 3 double crochets, chain 3 (for the corner), 3 more double crochets.
- Continue with 3 double crochets in each chain 1 space and corners as described until reaching the starting chain 3.
- Slip stitch to join to the top of the chain 3.
Continue this pattern, increasing rounds until your granny square reaches the desired size for the front/back of your vest. Remember, the vest is supposed to fit tight and be six inches smaller than your bust size.
Changing Colors:
Follow the color sequence of dark (eggplant), medium (purple), and light (lilac) in the rounds as you go, creating visual interest and segmentation.
Shoulder Straps:
- With the right side facing you, attach yarn at any corner.
- Start with a standing double crochet or chain 3 as a double crochet in the corner stitch, then double crochet in the next 6 stitches (7 total stitches for the strap).
- Chain 3 and turn your work, repeat double crochets across for a total of 6-7 rows or until you reach your desired length for the straps.
Side Panels:
- For creating side panels, start from the bottom corner stitch of the granny square.
- Count up 25 stitches from the corner, attach your yarn with a standing double crochet or chain 3.
- Make 24 more double crochets towards the corner stitch, fasten off.
- Repeat the same for the opposite side.
Trimming:
- Attach yarn to any single crochet row of the side panel.
- Do double crochets all around the bottom edge, including six evenly spaced decrease stitches in one round for shaping.
- Add a pretty picot edging (single crochet, chain 3, slip stitch in the first chain of chain-3, skip one stitch) around the neckline, armholes, and bottom of the vest.
Assembly:
- Make a second granny square panel for the back of the vest.
- With right sides together, sew shoulder straps and side panels together.
- Weave in any loose ends.
