Materials:
- 5 mm braided cord (color biscuit mentioned)
- 9 mm crochet hook
Pattern:
Base of the Bag:
- Start: Create a slip knot.
- Foundation Chain: Chain 13.
- First Row: Skip the chain closest to your hook and make 11 single crochets (sc) across. In the last chain, make 3 sc.
- Turning the Corner: Work 11 sc on the opposite side of your foundation chain. In the last chain (where the first 3 sc were made), add another 3 sc to turn the other corner.
- Joining: This completes the foundation oval that becomes the base of your bag.
Building the Sides:
Second Round: Start making 11 sc, working under both loops of each stitch from the previous round.
- Corners: At the corner stitches (where you made 3 sc in the same stitch in the previous round), make 2 sc in each of the 3 stitches to soften the curve.
- Continue the Pattern: Repeat making 11 sc along the side, and at the next corner, make 2 sc in each of the 3 corner stitches.
- Rounds: Continue working in rounds, making 1 sc in each stitch around without any additional increases. This will start forming the sides of the bag.
- Height: Continue crocheting in rounds until you reach the desired height for your tote bag.
Handles:
- Marking Handle Spots: Determine where you want the handles. A suggested method is counting in 5 stitches from each side of the bag’s top edge and marking these spots; this will define where the handles begin and end.
- Creating Handles: When you reach a marked stitch for a handle, create a chain of 16 (or more, depending on desired handle length). Skip the corresponding number of stitches on the bag, and attach the chain with a sc to form the handle.
Finishing Handles: Work sc in each chain across the handle. When you reach the body of the bag again, continue sc around until you reach the next handle spot. Repeat the process for the second handle.
Finishing Touches:
- Invisible Join: Once you've completed the final round and both handles, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull this through the remaining loop on your hook. Use a needle to weave this tail through the stitches to create an "invisible join," making it hard to tell where the round began or ended.
- Securing Ends: Weave in all ends securely inside the tote bag.
Adding Tags or Decoration (Optional): Sew on any decorative tags or embellishments to personalize your tote bag.
