Crochet Cardigan Pattern

Materials:

  • Yarn: Super Soft Aran (Category 4 worsted weight, 100% acrylic)
  • Hook: 6 mm hook for most of the cardigan, 5 mm hook for ribbing on sleeves
  • Yarn/wool needle
  • Pair of scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Stitch markers

Gauge:

  • Based on your body measurements (Refer to the pattern in the video for sizes ranging from Child 2 years to adult 5XL)

Instructions:

1. Back Panel:

  1. Foundation:
    • Form a slip knot.
    • Chain 4 (the first 3 chains count as the first stitch).
    • Work foundation double crochet (DC) as follows:
      1. Yarn over, insert hook into the first chain, pull up a loop, yarn over and go through one loop on the hook, yarn over, go through two loops, and yarn over, go through two loops.
      2. Continue to work foundation DC until you achieve the desired length, measuring from the shoulder to the upper or lower hip. Adjust your stitch count to a multiple of three.
  2. Pattern Rounds:
    • Round 1: Foundation DC count should be a multiple of three.
    • Round 2: Chain 2 (counts as first DC), skip 2 stitches, work 3 DC in the next stitch, repeat (skip 2 stitches, 3 DC in next stitch) to the end, ending with 2 DC in the last 2 stitches.
    • Round 3: Chain 2, turn, DC in next stitch, chain 2, DC 3 together over the next 3 DC from the previous round, chain 2, repeat (DC 3 together, chain 2) to end with 2 DC.
    • Round 4: Chain 2, turn, DC into each stitch and chain space to the end.
    • Rounds 5 & 6: Chain 2, turn, work DC across.
    • Repeat rounds 2-6 until the back panel reaches your desired width (shoulder to shoulder measurement + 2 inches).

2. Front Panels:

  1. Foundation:
    • Chain the same number of foundation DC as the back panel.
    • Work the pattern as follows, repeating rounds 2-6 for the back panel.
    • Work until each front panel is half of the shoulder-to-shoulder measurement (i.e., 8 inches for a 16-inch shoulder measurement).
  2. Ribbing:
    • Chain 11, turn.
    • Single crochet (SC) in second chain from hook and each across (10 SC).
    • Slip stitch (SS) into the next stitch of the front panel, turn, and work SC in back loops only (BLO).
    • Continue to work SC in BLO, chaining one and turning at the end of each row, joining the ribbing to the front panel until the entire front panel edge is ribbed.

3. Joining Front and Back Panels:

  1. Seam Shoulders:
    • Align front and back panels, and seam 2 inches from the shoulder edge, leaving the ribbed portion unseamed.
    • Repeat for the other shoulder.
  2. Side Seams:
    • Mark armhole depth (7 inches for size medium), and seam sides, leaving armhole spaces unstitched.

4. Sleeves:

  1. Attach Yarn:
    • Attach yarn at the underarm.
    • Chain 2, work DC around the armhole space.
    • Adjust stitch count to a multiple of 3 if needed.
  2. Sleeve Rounds:
    • Follow the same pattern rounds 2-6 as the panels.
    • Continue working the pattern in the round, turning after each round to keep the seam straight.
  3. Cuff Ribbing:
    • Switch to a 5 mm hook.
    • Chain 11, turn.
    • SC in second chain from hook and each across, attach to the sleeve edge with SS.
    • Continue to work SC in BLO, chaining one and turning, joining ribbing to sleeve edge until cuff is complete.
  4. Second Sleeve:
    • Repeat the steps for the second sleeve.

5. Pockets (Optional):

  1. Work Pockets:
    • Start with a foundation DC round, work 24 stitches or desired width.
    • Follow rounds 2-6 until the desired pocket depth is reached.
    • Create a second pocket.
  2. Attach Pockets:
    • Position pockets by wearing the cardigan and marking comfortable placements.
    • Seam around the three sides of each pocket.

6. Collar and Bottom Ribbing:

  1. Bottom Ribbing:
    • Attach yarn at the bottom edge.
    • Work a round of SC evenly across the bottom edge, chain 11, and work ribbing as per front panels.
    • Attach to bottom edge with SS, continuing until the bottom edge is ribbed.
  2. Collar:
    • Chain 21 (or desired width for wider collar).
    • Work SC in second chain from hook and across, attach to the neckline with SS.
    • Continue to work SC in BLO, chaining and turning, joining to the neckline until the collar is complete.

7. Finishing:

  1. Weave in Ends:
    • Use a yarn needle to weave in all the loose ends on the wrong side of the cardigan.
  2. Block Cardigan:
    • Block your cardigan to shape it if necessary for better fit and drape.

Notes:

  • Measurements and stitch counts will vary depending on the size you are making.
  • Ensure to measure as you go to achieve the desired fit.

Enjoy making your crochet cardigan!
