Detailed Slouchy Beanie Pattern

Materials Required:

  • Double-headed crochet hook, size J (6 mm)
  • Regular 5 mm crochet hook (for the brim)
  • Worsted weight yarn (number 4), main color and a color-changing yarn
  • Scissors
  • Needle for weaving in ends
  • Measuring tape

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • yo: yarn over
  • tss: Tunisian simple stitch
  • tks: Tunisian knit stitch
  • tsmock: Tunisian smock stitch

Step-by-Step Pattern:

Brim:

  1. Foundation Row:
    • Using the 5 mm crochet hook, ch 2.
    • Create foundation single crochets (fsc) until the piece measures 2 inches.
  2. Ribbing:
    • Ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only across the row.
    • Continue this row until the ribbing measures 19 inches for a women's size.
  3. Joining the Brim:
    • Fold the ribbing so the two short ends meet.
    • Sl st the two ends together, matching the outside loops to create a seamless join.

Hat Body:

  1. Set Up Row:
    • Switch to the double-headed crochet hook and work around the edge of the brim.
    • sc along one edge, inserting an extra stitch into every ribbing, ensuring you end up with an odd number of stitches.
  2. Tunisian SetUp:
    • Pick up and leave loops on the hook around the entire brim.
    • Then, introduce the second color and using it for the return pass.
  3. Tunisian Knit Stitch (tks):
    • For the next round, work Tunisian knit stitch (insert the hook through the stitch, not the front bar).
    • Do a return pass, picking up loops in the forward direction while working in your multicolor yarn backward.
  4. Tunisian Smock Stitch (tsmock):
    • Work the smock stitch by doing tss2tog (first going yarn under, then yarn over and pull through two bars).
    • For the return pass, continue in the multicolor yarn, ensuring to follow my loop work through two fingerprints.
    • Repeat this until your hat body measures approximately 6.5 inches from the top of the brim.
  5. Decreasing:
    • Switch to tks entirely, without the yarn under before doing the decrease.
    • Do the same technique but through three and then decrease the overall circumference by half.
    • Work two rows of tks to cinch the hat at the top properly.

Finishing:

  1. Cast Off:
    • Using the main color, sc around the last row of stitches while pulling the yarn through each loop.
    • Cut a long tail to close the hat top securely.
  2. Assembling the Pom Pom:
    • Attach the pom pom using the elastic loop, securing it strongly with stitches and knots inside the hat.
  3. Weaving Ends:
    • Weave in all loose yarn ends securely, ensuring there are no visible tails.
  4. Fluffing the Pom Pom:
    • Use a hair dryer to fluff the pom-pom if needed.

Notes:

  • Customize the size by adjusting the length of the ribbing.
  • The pattern is flexible to changes using different colors or playing around with two-colored stitches.

Conclusion:

Congratulations! You've completed your slouchy beanie using the Tunisian crochet technique.
