Materials Needed:

  • Size 8 or 4.0 mm crochet hook
  • Medium weight yarn (two colors: main for the strawberry and green for the leaves)

Starting the Base:

  1. Slip Knot and Foundation Chain:
    • Begin with a slip knot.
    • Chain 4.
  2. Forming the Circle:
    • Insert the hook into the first chain.
    • Yarn over and pull through both loops to form a circle.

  1. Working Puff Stitches:
    • Chain 1 and pull up the loop.
    • Yarn over, insert the hook into the center of the circle, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Repeat this for a total of 5 times to start creating a puff stitch.
    • Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
    • Chain 1 to lock the puff stitch.
    • Repeat to create 5 total puff stitches in the circle.
    • Join the round by inserting the hook into the space between the first two puff stitches, yarn over, pull up a loop, and pull through to join.
    • Pull the yarn tight to close the circle.

Increasing the Circle:

  1. Round 2:
    • Chain 1.
    • In the joining space, work 2 puff stitches.
    • In each space around, work 2 puff stitches.
    • At the end, you should have 10 puff stitches.
    • Join the round with a slip stitch.
  2. Round 3:
    • Chain 1.
    • Alternate between working 2 puff stitches in one space and 1 puff stitch in the next space around.
    • At the end of this round, you should have 15 puff stitches.
    • Join with a slip stitch.
  3. Round 4:
    • Chain 1.
    • Work one single crochet in each stitch around.
    • Join with a slip stitch.
  4. Round 5:
    • Repeat as in round 4, work one single crochet in each stitch.
    • Join with a slip stitch.

Creating the Leaves:

  1. Round 6:
    • Attach green yarn for the leaves.
    • Chain 3, skip 2 stitches, and work a single crochet in the third stitch.
    • Repeat: chain 3, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the third stitch.
    • Continue around and join the round.
  2. Round 7:
    • Chain 1, turn your work.
    • In each chain-3 space, work: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 2 double crochets, 1 double crochet with picot stitch (chain 3, slip stitch into the first chain), 2 double crochets, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet.
    • Repeat for each chain-3 space around.
    • Join with a slip stitch.

Finishing the Strawberry:

  1. Round 8:
    • Chain 1, turn the work.
    • Locate the skipped stitches from round 5.
    • Work 2 double crochets in each skipped stitch.
    • Chain 1 between each set of double crochets.
  2. Creating the Drawstring:
    • Chain 31 (or desired length) for the drawstring cord.
    • Weave the chain through the chain-1 spaces from the last round.
    • Secure the cord as desired, and optionally attach a key ring.
