Materials Needed:
Yarn in two colors (one for the body and belly, another for the tentacles)
- For a large plushie: 7 weight yarn and an 8mm hook
- For a small plushie: 4 weight yarn and a 3.75mm hook
Yarn needle
- Safety eyes (or your choice for eyes)
- Scissors
- Polyfill or preferred stuffing material
Body:
Start: Create a slip knot on your hook, chain 2. Alternatively, start with a magic ring.
- Round 1: Perform 6 single crochets (SC) into the first chain (or into the magic ring).
- Round 2: Increase (2 SC) in each stitch around. Total = 12 SC.
- Round 3: One SC in the next stitch, then increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. Total = 18 SC.
- Round 4: One SC in the next 2 stitches, increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. Total = 24 SC.
- Round 5: One SC in the next 3 stitches, then increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. Total = 30 SC.
- Round 6: One SC in the next 4 stitches, then increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. Total = 36 SC.
- Round 7 (Final round of increases): One SC in the next 5 stitches, then increase in the next stitch. Repeat around. Total = 42 SC.
- Rounds 8-14: One SC in each stitch around. Total per round remains 42 SC.
- Round 15: Start the decrease. SC in the next 5 stitches, then perform a SC decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around. Total = 36 SC.
- Round 16: Working in the front loops only, SC in the first stitch, skip the next stitch, perform 5 double crochets (DC) in the next stitch, skip the next stitch. Repeat around to create a ruffled edge.
Belly:
Repeat Rounds 1-6 of the body pattern with the second color of yarn. End with 36 SCs around.
Tentacles (Make 7 total; 3 in one color, 4 in the second color):
- For Belly Color Tentacles: Chain 35, then 3 SCs in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. This creates a spiral pattern.
- For Body Color Tentacles: Chain 35, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
Assembling the Jellyfish:
- Attach Eyes: Place safety eyes between rounds you prefer (suggestion: 5 rounds from the bottom), leaving a space of about 5 stitches between them.
- Sew Belly to Body: Use yarn tails to sew the belly to the body, matching stitch to stitch for a neat finish.
- Attach Tentacles: Secure the tentacles around the base of the body, distributing them evenly. You may attach these on the inside of the body, securing them with knots and trimming the excess yarn.
