Making Your Amigurumi Teddy Bear Head
Supplies Needed:
- DK weight cotton yarn (Light worsted weight)
- Size D (3.25 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- Fiberfill for stuffing
- 6 mm safety eyes
- Scrap yarns in white and black colour for the nose and mouth.
Step by step Pattern
Head and Body:
- Start with a Magic Circle.
- Chain 1, then make 8 single crochets into the circle.
- Close the circle but not completely, as closing it fully after round 2 is preferred.
- Round 2: Increase by making 2 single crochets in each stitch around (16 single crochets).
- Round 3: Alternate one single crochet and an increase (two single crochets in the next stitch) all the way around (24 single crochets).
- Round 4: Follow a pattern of two single crochets and an increase of (32 single crochets).
- Rounds 5 to 11: Make one crochet in each stitch. Each round should also have 32 single crochets. This forms the chubby part of the bear.
- Round 12: Start decreasing for the top of the head by making two single crochets followed by a decrease all around, reducing the total stitches to 24.
- Round 13: Alternate one single crochet with one decrease all the way around to reach 16 single crochets.
- Round 14: Only make decreases this round until you're left with 8 stitches. Stuff the head before closing.
Nose:
- Create a magic circle with white yarn, chain 1, and make 6 single crochets into the circle.
- Increase every stitch in the second round for 12 single crochets.
- Cut a long tail for sewing it onto the head.
Mouth:
- Using black yarn, stitch a small V and a line below it directly onto the head of the bear for the mouth and nose area.
Ears:
- Repeat the start as with the head: magic circle, chain 1, and 6 single crochets into the circle.
- Round 2: Make an increase in every stitch for a total of 12 single crochets.
- Rounds 3 and 4: Make one single crochet in each stitch around. Finish with 12 single crochets each round.
- Cut a long tail for sewing, and attach the ears to the head.
Finishing Touches:
- Attach the safety eyes between rounds 11 and 12 or wherever seems to fit the bear’s face best.
- Sew the nose onto the face using the tail from when you finished crocheting it.
- Use the end of the yarn needle to weave in any loose ends and secure all parts firmly.
- Optionally, you can add a keychain loop to the top of the bear’s head to turn it into a keychain.
