This crochet mesh bag is perfect for everyday use, whether you're heading to the market or spending a day at the beach. Lightweight yet sturdy, it's crafted from soft cotton yarn, which makes it both durable and flexible enough to hold all your essentials. The mesh design gives it a unique look, allowing for some stretch, which is great for fitting in those extra items.
Crochet Mesh Bag
Materials Needed
- Cotton yarn (Loops and Threads brand mentioned)
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Sewing needle
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers
Starting the Bag
Create a slip knot.
- Make an odd-numbered chain for the width of the bag (For a bag approximately 12 inches wide, chain 47. For a wider bag, around 15-16 inches, chain 59).
- Add four additional chains to the initial chain count.
First Row
- Double crochet (dc) into the seventh chain from the hook.
- Chain one, then dc into every second chain until the end of the row.
Creating the Mesh
- Chain one and flip the work.
- Perform a dc into the base chain directly under every dc from the previous row.
- To finish the row and create symmetry, dc into the second stitch from the hook, then chain one and slip stitch into the third chain from the hook.
Building the Bag's Height
- Chain four and dc into the top of the next dc from the previous row.
- Continue chain one, dc into the next dc until you reach the end of the row.
- At the end of the row, slip stitch into the third chain of the starting chain four.
Repeat
- Continue the pattern from step 5 (the second row) until the bag reaches your desired height. The example uses 18 rows to achieve a bag that is approximately 11 to 12 inches after some stretching.
Adding Straps
- Mark the bag into thirds on both the front and back to determine strap placement.
- Start the row as normal until you reach the first stitch marker. Remove the marker, perform a dc.
- Chain an odd number for the strap length (61 is suggested for a good length).
- Attach the end of the chain to the part of the bag opposite the starting point with a dc to create the first strap.
- Resume the mesh pattern along the length of the chain for the strap.
- Slip stitch along the sides of the strap to provide reinforcement and reduce stretching.
Finishing the Bag
- After completing the straps and reinforcing them with slip stitches, continue with the mesh pattern until the end.
- Fasten off the working yarn and weave in all ends to secure them.
Final Touches
- Ensure all stitches are secure, and any excess yarn has been trimmed.
- The bag is now complete and ready for use or gifting.
