The finished wallet measures about 17 cm long and 9 cm wide, with a strap that adds convenience. Its appearance is neat and smart with a folding design secured by a magnetic clasp, making it stand out from ordinary wallets. The texture is firm yet flexible, thanks to the combination of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches. The pattern uses two colors, creating an elegant and subtle contrast that enhances its style. The overall shape is rectangular with clean edges, perfect for everyday use or as a thoughtful handmade gift.

The wallet is constructed using a repeating stitch pattern that alternates single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet into each stitch, worked over several rows to build an attractive motif. Starting with a foundation chain, the project grows through 18 or more rows, creating a textured fabric with an interesting stitch combination. The assembly involves folding the piece into compartments and sewing on a strap with D-rings and a magnetic closure.

For those following the video: Start with a long chain to get the width you want, then always repeat [skip two, insert three different stitches in one chain] to create the textured motif. Finish with a single crochet.

Row 2 (Establish Pattern):

  • Ch 2, turn.
  • In first st, work sc, hdc, dc in the same st.
  • Skip 2 sts, next (sc, hdc, dc) in next st.
  • Repeat to last 3 sts, skip 2, sc in last st.

This row establishes your motif clusters, and you should see a clear "fan" or shell shape developing. Always start and end with single crochets for neat edges.

3:

  • Repeat Row 2.

Rows 4–18:

  • Repeat Row 2, changing colors after the 9th motif row as desired for a striped or two-tone effect.

For those who don’t read patterns: Keep repeating the special cluster pattern, making a three-stitch cluster (sc, hdc, dc) in every repeat, changing color when your work is half complete.

Color Change:

  • After 9 motif rows in color A (gray), switch to color B (silver). Continue for another 7 motifs so you have 9 rows of gray, 7 rows of silver.

  • Attach purse strap to D-rings.

What you can make by using these stitches

  • Coin purses/wallets
  • Tablet or phone cases
  • Pouches and clutch bags
  • Pencil cases
  • Mini gift bags
  • Decorative edging for blankets

If You’re Not Familiar With Patterns...

After chaining, keep repeating a group of single, half double, and double crochet stitches in the same hole, skip two spaces, and repeat until the end. Always start and end with a single crochet for flat edges. After half your rows, switch to a new color. Once your rectangle is finished, fold the two sides in and sew—add a button or magnet and a strap.

Enjoy making your wallet! If you have uneven edges, block your work or add a single crochet border before sewing together. This basic pattern is a gateway to making lots of flat pouches and fold-over wallets in any color or size you like.
