If you enjoy crafting, try making a crochet mesh tote bag! It’s a fun project that you can carry out with just a few tools like yarn and a crochet hook. Start by crafting a long chain with the yarn, then create a net-like pattern to form the bag.
Crochet Mesh Tote Bag Pattern
Keep repeating the easy steps to expand the mesh until your bag is the size you like. Once you’re done, you can use this lightweight bag to carry your beach essentials or groceries. It's a creative way to make something both stylish and practical.
Supplies Needed:
- Cheap yarn (purchased from Walmart) suitable for a 5.5 mm hook.
- A 5.5 mm crochet hook.
- Scissors or snippers.
- A darning needle (optional for sewing sides together, can also use hook).
Crochet Instructions:
Starting the Chain:
- Begin with a slip knot and place it on your hook.
- Chain in multiples of four until you reach the desired size of the bag. For example, chain 36 (make sure it's in multiples of four).
- After your initial chain, add an extra chain of 10.
Creating the Mesh Pattern:
Perform a double crochet in the 10th chain from the hook:
- Yarn over, insert the hook into the 10th chain.
- Yarn over, pull through the chain.
- Yarn over, pull through the first two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over, pull through the next two loops on the hook.
Chain three and skip the next three stitches.
- Perform a double crochet in the fourth stitch.
- Repeat step 5 and 6 across the entire chain. You should end with a double crochet in the last stitch if you've counted correctly.
Building the Bag:
- For the next row, chain six and turn your work.
- Perform a double crochet into the first large hole you made (not into a stitch, into the space).
- Chain three, then double crochet into the next space. Repeat this across the second row.
- Continue with this pattern (chain six, turn work, double crochet in first large space, chain three, double crochet in next space) until the bag reaches the desired size. For the given pattern, 21 rows were made.
Finishing the Bag:
- Fold the panel in half to form the body of the bag.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the sides together either with a darning needle or by slip stitching with the crochet hook.
For the handle:
- Make a slip knot and attach it to the side of the bag where you want the handle to begin.
- Chain to the desired handle length (70 chains were used in the video).
- To thicken the handle, perform single crochets back down the chain.
- Attach the end of the handle to the opposite side of the bag with slip stitches for security, and weave in the ends.
Optionally, turn the bag inside out if you prefer the stitches to be on the inside.
