Step-by-Step Guide to Crochet Ripples Baby Cocoon Sleep Sack

Introduction

We're going to make this beautiful baby cocoon set or snuggle sack set. I can't tell you how much I love how this pattern turned out. We are using the Ripple Stitch, which has a retro vintage look to it. The yarn is Yarn Inspirations Caron Baby Cakes in the retro color. You will need only one cake of this yarn for both pieces.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Yarn Inspirations Caron Baby Cakes (retro color)
  • Crochet hooks: 5.5 mm (I) and 4.5 mm (7)
  • Conclusion: You need only one cake for the entire project, making it convenient and cost-effective.

Starting the Cocoon

  1. Create a Slip Knot
    • Take your 5.5 mm crochet hook.
    • Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
  2. Chain
    • Chain multiples of 12 and then add three more chains.
    • For this pattern, chain 132 + 3, making a total of 135 chains.
  3. Double Crochet
    • Double crochet into the fourth chain from the hook.
    • Description of the double crochet process.
    • Repeat this process to the end of the row.
  4. Patterning with Ripple Stitch
    • Double crochet into each of the next three chains.
    • Double crochet two together twice to form a valley.
    • Double crochet into the next three chains to form a hill.
    • Continue this pattern until the end of the row.
  5. Increase and Decrease
    • At the start and end of each row, double crochet twice.
    • Follow the pattern to maintain the ripple effect as you go along new rows.
  6. Continue Rows
    • Chain three and turn your work.
    • Double crochet into the base stitch.
    • Repeat the ripple pattern:
      • Three double crochets
      • Two double crochet two together for valleys
      • Three double crochets
      • Two double crochets into each of the next two stitches for hills.
    • Repeat for a total of 20 rows or until the project measures about 13 inches wide.

Seam the Cocoon

  1. Seam the Edges
    • Fold the cocoon in half lengthwise, matching the ends.
    • Seam the sides together using single crochet or slip stitch.
    • Ensure the seam is on the same side before cutting and hiding the tails.

Adding the Border

  1. Add Border to the Top
    • Turn the brim down and ensure the right side of the work is facing you.
    • Attach yarn and create a small scalloped edge alternating between single crochets and slip stitches.

Creating the Beanie

  1. Starting the Beanie
    • Use a 4.5 mm hook.
    • Create a slip knot and chain 36 (multiples of 12) + 3, totaling 39 chains.
    • Follow the same ripple pattern as the cocoon:
      • Chain three as the first double crochet.
      • Double crochet into the fourth chain from the hook.
      • Continue the ripple pattern.
  2. Color Changes
    • Change colors by finishing the last double crochet with the new color.
    • Chain three with the new color and continue the pattern.
  3. Measuring and Completing Rows
    • Total of 20 rows or until the beanie measures about 15 inches in circumference.
    • Measure as you go to ensure the right size.
  4. Seaming the Beanie
    • Seam the sides together using a simple sewing technique.
    • Use a color that matches the edges of your beanie.
  5. Closing the Top
    • Weave in the top stitches and gather them into a small hole.
    • Secure with a knot and hide the tail.
  6. Adding a PomPom
    • Attach a removable pompom using an elastic and a cinch guide.

Conclusion

Following these steps, you will crochet a beautiful retro-style baby cocoon set consisting of a snuggle sack and a beanie. This project combines attractive ripple stitch patterns with vintage yarn colors, ensuring a charming and cozy set for any baby.
