Crochet Backpack Pattern
Materials:
- 3mm polyester macrame thread
- 5mm crochet hook
- Zipper
- Needle and thread for sewing
- Lining fabric
- Scissors
Pattern:
Bottom Section:
Foundation Chain:
- Make a starting knot and chain 21 (or more if you prefer a larger width).
Row 1:
- Single crochet (SC) in the back loop of the second chain from the hook. Continue with SC in each chain across. You will have 20 stitches in total.
- Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2 to 22:
- Skip the first stitch and start SC from the second stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.
- At the end of each row, ensure to SC into the turning chain. This maintains the stitch count.
Decrement Section:
Row 23:
- Decrease the stitch count by starting with a single crochet stitch over the first two stitches. Continue with SC across the row until the last two stitches, where you make another decrease (one SC over two stitches). This results in a total of 18 stitches.
Row 24:
- SC across 18 stitches. Chain 1 and turn.
For Row 25:
- Decrease at both ends of the row (one SC over two stitches at the start and end). This results in a total of 16 stitches.
Row 26:
- SC across 16 stitches. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 27:
- Decrease at both ends of the row. This results in a total of 14 stitches.
Last Row (Row 28):
- Start with a double decrease (one SC over four stitches). Decrease again at the end with another double decrease (one SC over four stitches). This results in a total of 10 stitches.
Border:
- Chain 1 and make slip stitches all around the piece. For the sides, make one stitch in front of each row, and move corner-to-corner without chaining. When done, cut the thread.
Top Section:
Row 1:
- Reattach the thread in front of the 16th row (approx.) and make a line of SC in the back loop of the row of slip stitches.
- Continue SC evenly without increasing or decreasing until the round is complete. Close in the chain you started with and start a new row.
Rows 2-6:
- Repeat SC around the piece. Create 5 rows in total before stopping.
Making Another Piece:
Second Piece:
- Create a second piece exactly as described above.
Finishing for the Second Piece:
- Before cutting the thread, mark the stitch directly opposite to the beginning of the row on the other side, then add another row from here to the mark to compensate for the space the zipper will take up.
Pocket:
Pocket Piece:
- Make a piece for the pocket, 18 stitches wide and 12 rows high.
- Once done, make slip stitches over three sides but not the full turn. Leave the last row and cut the thread.
Second Pocket Piece:
- Make another piece using the same measurements. Complete as above.
Back to Main Piece:
- Go back to the row of slip stitches on the main piece and make SC in the front loop of the slip stitches, then go back and make a row in both loops.
Attach Pocket:
- Count 14 rows from the base of the main piece and attach the pocket using slip stitches. Ensure to leave two stitches less than the width of the bag.
Install the Pocket Cover:
- Attach the pocket cover (same way as the main pieces) so that the slip stitch row faces outward.
Lining:
Cut Fabric:
- Measure the finished piece (approx. 28 cm x 25 cm). Cut the lining fabric accordingly with an additional 3 cm x 3 cm for corners.
Sew Lining:
- Sew and prepare the lining fabric. It should match the size of the crocheted piece.
Attach Zipper:
- Sew the zipper onto the main pieces before attaching the lining completely. Remember to install three rings for backpack straps.
Finish:
- Sew the main pieces together with the lining inside. Make sure to insert the end of the thread under the stitches first.
- Stitch in front of each stitch, securing it neatly.
Final Words:
- Follow the same pattern to complete additional parts like straps or decorative features if desired.
- Enjoy your handmade backpack. Feel free to customize colors or sizes as you prefer.
