Making a crochet scrunchie is like weaving a little circle of joy using just yarn and a crochet hook. You start with wrapping yarn around an elastic band, creating loops that hug it tightly, making sure not a speck of the elastic peeks through. With each twist and turn of your hook, the yarn transforms into a soft, cozy cover that gathers in ruffles.
Crochet Scrunchie
Materials Needed:
- Yarn
- Crochet hook
- Elastic band
- Scissors
Instructions:
Create a slip knot to begin.
- Attach the slip knot onto the elastic band with a crochet hook.
- Single crochet all the way around the elastic. As you start, make sure to crochet over the tail end of the yarn to avoid having to weave it in later.
- Once you’ve gone all around the elastic with single crochets, add a few more to fully cover and conceal any gaps, so the elastic isn’t visible.
- When the elastic is fully covered, insert the hook into the top of the first single crochet and perform a slip stitch to close the round.
- Chain 3, then, in the next stitch, work 3 double crochets.
- Continue to place 3 double crochets in each stitch all the way around the scrunchie.
- As it gets fuller, you may need to push back the stitches to see the next stitch.
- Once you reach the end of the round, slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 space.
For a Smaller Scrunchie:
- If you want a smaller, less full scrunchie, end your project here, cut your yarn and weave in the ends.
For a Larger, Fluffier Scrunchie (Round Two):
- If you desire a larger scrunchie, begin round two by chaining 3.
- Repeat the process of adding 3 double crochets into each stitch from the previous round to increase the ruffle effect.
- Once done with the second round, slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 space, then chain one, cut the yarn and pull it through tight to secure the round.
Adding a Color Trim:
- If desired, add a slip knot of a new color yarn to the scrunchie.
- Single crochet in each stitch from the previous round.
- Use this step to weave in the tails from the first color and the new trim color as you go.
- Once you reach the end of the round, slip stitch over the first single crochet, chain one, cut the yarn, and pull tight.
- Weave in any remaining ends to finish.
