Sol Gardner Doll Crochet Pattern (Inspired by the Movie "Soul")

Before You Start

  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • Familiarize yourself with the basic amigurumi techniques: magic ring, single crochet, increases, decreases, and slip stitch.
  • Assemble all necessary materials and tools before starting.
  • Use a stitch marker to help you keep track of the rounds.
  • Prepare a well-lit, comfortable workspace.
  • As you work, count at the end of each round to ensure your stitch number is correct.
  • Take breaks to stretch your hands—regular exercises can help prevent strain.

Pattern Notes

  • The doll is worked largely in continuous rounds (spiral); do not join after each round unless noted.
  • Use tight stitches to prevent the fiberfill from showing; adjust hook size down if needed.
  • The body, legs, and head are worked as one piece for efficiency and strength.
  • Facial details (eyebrows, mouth) are embroidered; the glasses are made with wire, yarn, or felt.
  • You can substitute yarn color for felt when creating the eyes.
  • All parts (arms, hat, and other features) are created separately and sewn on.

How I Made the Crochet Pattern?

  • Listened to and transcribed the video’s step-by-step instructions.
  • Transformed the rounds and rows into standard written amigurumi pattern format.
  • Matched color changes, assembly, and embellishment techniques per the video.
  • Broke complex steps into clear, sequential tasks.
  • Added explanatory notes between sections for clarity.

Skill Level

  • Confident Beginner to Intermediate
  • Basic amigurumi skills, some embroidery, and straightforward assembly required.

Finished Size

  • Approx. 18–22 cm (7-8.5") tall, depending on yarn and tension.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn in Gray color (for body, head, legs, and arms)
  • Blach or White (or similar) yarn for details
  • White (fine) yarn for mouth embroidery

  • 2.0 mm crochet hook (or appropriate size for your yarn)
  • Smaller gauge hook for tiny details (optional)
  • Yarn needle for sewing and embroidery
  • Scissors
  • Friselina or felt fabric for eyes (or use safety eyes or embroidery)
  • Flexible copper wire (black, white, or silver) for glasses
  • Pins for assembly

Gauge

  • Not critical for amigurumi; aim for dense, tightly worked stitches.
  • Sample: 6 sc x 6 rows ≈ 2 x 2 cm.

The head and body are worked seamlessly—this makes your doll extra sturdy! Stuff firmly before the head closes completely.

Arms (make 2)

  • MR, 6 sc.
  • Next round: [sc, inc] around (9)
  • 4 rounds of sc (9)
  • [dec] in first two sts, 7 sc (8)
  • 4 rounds sc (8)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

As you finish each arm, lightly stuff, then sew onto body at shoulders. Repeat for the second arm.

Hat

  • MR, 6 sc.
  • [inc in each st] x 6 (12)
  • Work 12 sc in back loop only (gives hat rim shape).
  • [sc, inc] around (18)
  • Sc in each (18)
  • [inc in each st] (36)
  • [2 sc, inc] around (48)
  • slst to finish, cut, weave in ends.

The hat starts flat for a cute cap effect; gently shape as you sew it to the head.

Eyes, Eyebrows, & Mouth

  • Cut two circles from friselina or felt for eyes; sew or glue in position. (Option: crochet small circles—MR, 6 sc, close.)
  • Embroider eyebrows with lilac thread using 2-3 short lines each.
  • Embroider mouth in black or dark yarn, as a simple smiling curve.

Glasses

  • Shape two circles with copper wire (black, white, or silver). Join in the center, fit around eyes.
  • Attach with yarn or secure under hat edge.
  • Alternatively, make a long crochet chain and sew in glasses shape.

If You’re Not a Pattern Reader

You’ll start by making two little feet, join them together and crochet upward to grow the body, then make the head as a ball on top. The arms and the hat are made separately and sewn on to finish. The face is sewn on or embroidered at the end.

Assembly & Finishing

  • Stuff and close head if needed.
  • Sew arms on two rounds below head/neck.
  • Place hat and sew to head.
  • Sew or glue eyes in position, then embroider brows and mouth.
  • Make and attach glasses as desired.
  • Tidy all yarn tails, shape and adjust details.
  • You may add blush or extra details with colored yarn, thread, or pens.

Solution of Common Problems

  • Stitches too loose, stuffing shows: Use a smaller hook for tight fabric.
  • Head wobbles: Add extra stitches and reinforce when sewing.
  • Parts misaligned: Pin pieces in place before sewing.
  • Wire for glasses too sharp: Cover ends with yarn or beads for safety.

What You Can Make With These Stitches

  • Dolls inspired by other movie or cartoon characters
  • Personalized plushies or gifts with glasses, hats, and unique accessories
  • Amigurumi heads, arms, and body shapes for imaginative plushes
  • Mini keychain versions using thinner yarn and hooks
