Materials:
- Gray, black, white, and gold plush yarn
- 5.5 millimeter crochet hook
- 12 millimeter safety eyes
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Yarn needle (tarning needle)
Body (Start with black yarn):
- Create a slip knot and chain 2.
- Skip the first chain and work 6 single crochets (sc) into the second chain from the hook.
- Pull the end to tighten the center and work in a spiral, increasing in every stitch (2 sc in one stitch, known as an increase) to have 12 stitches in total.
- Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the next round. Work 1 sc followed by an increase, repeat this for the entire round to have 24 stitches.
- Start the next round with 3 sc, followed by an increase. Repeat this all the way around to have 30 stitches.
- Work a round of 30 sc without increasing.
For the next round, work 9 sc in black, then introduce white yarn on the 10th, working in a pattern (this creates the face) of sc with black and white as described in the video.
Insert Safety Eyes:
Insert the safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8, centering them within the white part of the face.
Continue the Body:
- Continue to crochet the body as described, by alternating rounds of sc with increase rounds, and later, decrease rounds.
- Start decreasing after reaching the desired height of the body (usually after several more rounds of sc). Work a decrease by pulling up a loop in two consecutive stitches and yarning over, pulling through all three loops on the hook.
Keep decreasing and stuffing the penguin with fiberfill until you close the gap at the top.
Wings and Feet (Use gray for wings and gold for feet):
- Create a slip knot and chain 2.
- Work 4 sc into the second chain from the hook.
- Work in a spiral pattern, starting with sc and increases until you have a small, flat, oval shape.
- Close the top part of the wing/foot by working sc through both the front and back loops, creating a seam.
Leave a tail for sewing and attach to the body as per the video instructions, with the pointy part of the wing/foot pointing downwards.
Beak (Use gold yarn):
- Create a slip knot and chain 2.
- Work 4 sc into the second chain from the hook and work in a spiral pattern, with sc and increases, forming a small cone shape.
- Close with a slip stitch, leave a tail for sewing, and attach to the body below the eyes.
Assembly:
- Sew the wings onto each side of the body, in line with the eyes.
- Attach the feet at the bottom of the body.
- Sew the beak below and in between the eyes.
Finishing:
Weave in all the loose ends. Your plush penguin is now complete!
