Supplies Needed:

  • Yarn: Medium/4/worsted weight (approximately 500 yds/ 280g/ 460m). The pattern used “I Love This Yarn” by Hobby Lobby.
  • Hook: 6 mm (J) crochet hook.
  • Other: Yarn needle, scissors, (optional) a template for cutting fringe (a book or DVD case works well).

Gauge:

  • 4” x 4” = 8 (DC2TOG, CH 1) x 6 rows following the stitch pattern from repeat rows.

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern uses standard US crochet terms.
  • Final dimensions are 8” x 70” without fringe, 80” with fringe. Adjust the length by adding/subtracting repeat rows and width by adjusting the starting chain in multiples of 2.
  • CH 1 at the beginning of rows does NOT count as a stitch.
  • CH 2 at the beginning of rows counts as a DC.
  • DC2TOG is worked in the same ST, used as a cluster, not a decrease.
  • Stitch counts are provided at the bottom right of each row.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • CH – Chain
  • ST – Stitch
  • SK – Skip
  • SP – Space
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • DC2TOG – Double Crochet 2 Together (worked in the same chain space as a cluster, not a decrease).

Pattern Details:

  1. Start by chaining 31. HDC in the 2nd chain from the hook and each chain across. [30 stitches]
  2. CH 2 (counts as a DC), turn. DC2TOG in next ST, CH 1, SK next ST, repeat from * to * across, ending with a DC in the last ST. [14 DC clusters + 2 DC]
  3. CH 2 (counts as a DC), turn. DC2TOG in the next CH SP, CH 1, repeat from * to * across, end with a DC in the top of the CH 2. [14 DC clusters + 2 DC]
      1. Repeat step 3.
  4. CH 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn. HDC in each stitch across, working the last HDC at the top of CH 2. Fasten off and weave in ends. [30 stitches]

Optional Fringe:

  • Cut yarn strips about 11 inches long. This results in a 5-inch fringe.
  • Attach 2 strands in every other stitch along the short ends of the scarf for a simple look or in every stitch for a fuller fringe, avoiding the corner stitches.
  • To attach the fringe, fold the strands in half, insert the hook into a stitch, grab the looped end, pull through the stitch, then pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten.
