Materials Needed:

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • 12 mm safety eyes (or size appropriate for your yarn)
  • Chunky yarn for the main body (example given: green color)
  • Various colors of chunky yarn for tentacles (pinks and purples mentioned, but you can choose any colors)
  • Stuffing material
  • Premier parfait chunky yarn recommended

Head Pattern:

1 Save

Start with a Magic Ring:

  • Make a slip knot.
  • Chain 2 (this acts as your magic ring).
  • Perform 6 single crochets (sc) into the first chain.

Round 2:

  • Perform an increase (2 sc in one stitch) in each stitch around for a total of 12 stitches.

Round 3:

  • (1 sc, increase) repeat 6 times for a total of 18 stitches.

For Round 4:

  • (2 sc, increase) repeat 6 times for a total of 24 stitches.

2 Save

Round 5:

  • (3 sc, increase) repeat 6 times for a total of 30 stitches.

Rounds 6-8:

  • Sc in each stitch around for three rounds straight, maintaining the 30 stitches.

Creating the Shape:

  • Round 9: (3 sc, decrease) repeat 6 times (to decrease, pull yarn through two stitches and complete the stitch, reducing total count).
  • Round 10: (2 sc, decrease) repeat 6 times, decreasing to 18 stitches.

3 Save

Round 11 - Front Loops Only:

  • Work in front loops only this round.
  • In the first front loop: (half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet).
  • Slip stitch in the second front loop.
  • Repeat around.

Adding Safety Eyes:

  • Position safety eyes between rounds 8 and 9, approximately 8 stitches apart.
  • Secure the backings.

Round 12 - Working in Back Loops:

  • Work in the back loops left from the previous round.
  • Perform ((single crochet decrease) repeat 6 times) all in these back loops.

Stuff the Jellyfish:

4 Save

  • Fill your jellyfish with stuffing material to desired fullness.

Final Round and Closing:

  • Perform 6 decreases, reducing to 6 stitches.
  • Leave a long tail of yarn for sewing.
  • Sew the jellyfish top shut, weaving in and out of the front loops of the 6 stitches.
  • Pull tight to close, then weave in the end securely.

Tentacles:

Start:

  • Create a slip knot with a long tail.
  • Attach yarn at the bottom of the jellyfish body with a slip stitch.
  • Chain 15 (for standard tentacles; adjust the length for longer tentacles):
  • Perform increases in each chain back to the body.

Secure:

  • Slip stitch into the original attachment point.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail.
  • Use a yarn needle to pull tails to the inside of the body and secure.

Repeat:

  • Create 4 or more tentacles, evenly spaced around the bottom of the jellyfish.
  • For variation, do some tentacles with 20 chains.
