Simple & Quick Crochet Mittens Pattern

Crochet mittens are a cozy and fun project you can do at home. You just need some soft yarn, a crochet hook, and a little bit of time. By following a pattern, you can create mittens that keep your hands warm during cold weather.

Plus, you can make them in different colors to match your winter outfits. Or even give them as thoughtful handmade gifts to your friends and family. Crocheting mittens is not only enjoyable. But it also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you see your finished product!

Crochet Mittens Pattern (One-Size-Fits-Most Adults)

Materials

  • Yarn:
    • 2 colors of DK-weight yarn (Double Knit):
      • Main Color (MC): Example: Brown
      • Contrast Color (CC): Example: Cream
    • Optional: You can pair the yarn with a mohair strand for added texture (not required).
      • Any DK-weight yarn (100% acrylic suggested) will work.
  • Hooks:
    • 4.5 mm crochet hook (for ribbing).
    • 5 mm crochet hook (for body of mittens).
  • Accessories:
    • Scissors.
    • Tapestry or darning needle (for sewing and weaving in ends).

Gauge

  • Ribbing Section: 10 rows of single crochet in the back loop = approx. 2 inches.
  • Body Section: 24 single crochet rounds = approx. 4 inches in diameter.

Finished Size

  • Length: Approx. 11 inches from the tip of the fingers to the start of the ribbing cuff.
  • Width: Approx. 3.5 inches across the hand (unstretched).

These are designed as "one-size-fits-most," but the size can be adjusted by changing yarn weight or hook size.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern uses US Terminology.
  2. Always slip stitch and chain 1 at the end of each round.
  3. Changing colors is done every 2 rows to create a striped pattern. Carry your unused yarn up the side for minimal ends to weave in.
  4. The thumb section is done separately after finishing the main body of the mitten.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Ribbing (Cuff)

  1. With the 4.5 mm hook and the Main Color (MC), make a slip knot and chain 11.
    Mittens 1 Save

(The length of the chain determines the width of the cuff. Adjust the chain number for a narrower or wider cuff.)
  2. Row 1:
    • Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 single crochet (SC) into each chain across.
    • (10 SC total)
    • Chain 1 and turn.
  3. Row 2 onward:
    • Work 1 SC in the back loop only of each stitch across to create the ribbed texture.
    • At the end of the row, chain 1, turn, and repeat.
  4. Work until you have 24 rows of ribbing. (This forms the circumference of the cuff. Adjust the number of rows for a tighter or looser cuff.)
  5. Joining the Ribbing:
    • Fold the ribbing in half to form a loop (right sides together).
    • Slip stitch the last row to the foundation chain through both loops of the foundation chain and the back loops of the last single crochet row.
    • Fasten off and flip the cuff right side out.

2. Body of the Mitten

  1. With the 5 mm hook, attach the Contrast Color (CC) to one edge of the ribbing (near the seam).
  2. Round 1 (Base Row):
    • Work 24 SC evenly around the edge of the ribbing (1 stitch per row).
    • Slip stitch to the first SC to join, chain 1.
      Mittens 3 Save
  3. Round 2:
    • Switch from regular SC to the central single crochet (CSC):
      • Insert your hook between the vertical bars of the stitch below rather than under the top two loops.
    • Work 1 CSC into each stitch around (24 stitches).
    • Slip stitch to the first CSC to join, chain 1.
  4. Rounds 3–7:
    • Work 1 CSC into each stitch around for 5 more rounds.
(You can adjust by adding or removing rows to fit your hand size.)
      Mittens 4 Save

3. Shape the Thumb Hole

  1. Round 8:
    • Work 1 CSC in the first 24 stitches, leaving the next 8 stitches unworked (these are for the thumb).
    • Slip stitch to join the round, chain 1.
  2. Round 9:
    • Work a round of 24 CSC (skipping over the thumb hole from the previous round).
    • Slip stitch to join and chain 1.
  3. Continue in the established pattern, alternating colors every 2 rows:
    • Work 14 additional rounds (7 sets of 2-row stripes).
(Adjust the total rounds for the length of your hand.)

4. Shaping the Tip of the Mitten

  1. Decrease Rounds:
    • Round 1: 4 SC, DEC. Repeat 4 times around.
      (28 stitches)
    • Round 2: 3 SC, DEC. Repeat 4 times around.
      (24 stitches)
    • Round 3: 2 SC, DEC. Repeat 4 times around.
      (20 stitches)
    • Round 4: 1 SC, DEC. Repeat 4 times around.
      (16 stitches)
    • Round 5: DEC in every stitch.
      (8 stitches)
  2. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
  3. Use the tapestry needle to weave through the front loops of the final 8 stitches, pull tight to close the opening, and secure the tail.
    Mittens 5 Save

5. Thumb

  1. Reattach yarn to the thumb hole using Contrast Color (CC).
  2. Round 1:
    • Work 8 SC evenly into the thumb hole.
    • Work 2 SC along the base gap (adjust placement to close any gaps).
    • (10 SC)
    • Slip stitch to join and chain 1.
  3. Round 2–9:
    • Work 1 CSC in each stitch around (10 stitches). Change color every 2 rows.
  4. Round 10 (Thumb Tip Decreases):
    • Work 5 DEC over 10 stitches.
    • (5 stitches)
  5. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Use the tapestry needle to weave through the final 5 stitches, pull tight, and secure.
  6. Weave in all loose ends from both the mitten body and thumb.

Special Techniques Used

  • Back Loop Only (BLO): Used to create the ribbed texture on the cuff.
  • Central Single Crochet (CSC): Worked into the center between vertical bars of the stitch below, creating a knit-like texture.

Customization Ideas

  • Stripe Variations: Experiment with different color combinations for stripes (e.g., monochrome, rainbow, or holiday colors).
  • Textured Cuffs: Use a different textured stitch like half-double crochet in the BLO for the cuff.
  • Fingertip-less Design: Skip closing the tip for fingerless mittens!
  • Add a Button or Tie: Attach decorative elements for flair.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  You've completed your cozy crochet mittens. These mittens feature a snug ribbed cuff, a textured finish with central single crochets, and a seamless thumb design for ultimate comfort and style.
