Materials Needed:
- Scissors
- 5mm crochet hook (Size H)
- Yarn in 3-4 colors
- Thread and sewing needle
- Buttons (purchased on sale at Hobby Lobby)
Granny Square Pattern:
Starting Your Granny Square:
- Begin with a slip knot and chain 3.
- Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
- Double crochet into the ring, chain 2.
- Make a cluster of 3 double crochet (DC) into the ring, chain 2.
- Repeat the cluster and chain 2 step until you have 4 clusters in the ring.
- Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3 to close the round and cut the yarn, weaving in the end.
Adding New Colors:
- Start each new color with a slip knot on the hook, chain 2 (counts as first DC).
- Work a DC into the same space, then chain 2 and add 2 clusters of 3 DC in each chain 2 space from the previous round.
- Continue around the square, slip stitching to the first DC to close the round.
Continuing the Granny Square:
- Keep adding new rounds by repeating the process of clusters and chain 2 spaces in each corner and a single cluster of 3 DC in the spaces between corners.
- Grow the granny square to the desired size, typically about 4 rounds for this project.
Joining Granny Squares:
Joining Technique:
- Put the granny squares back to back, so the front sides are facing out.
- Using a slip stitch, join the squares along the edges.
- Work in the ends as you go for a cleaner finish.
Assembling the Journal Cover:
- Join the squares in a 2x3 rectangle pattern, ensuring the squares are lined up properly.
- Once all six squares are joined, decide how you want to fold the piece to create the journal cover.
- Finishing the Journal Cover:
Edging:
- You may add a row of single crochet around the edge if desired.
- Add a couple of rows of single crochet along the top flap to create a sturdier edge.
Creating a Buttonhole:
- On the second row of the top flap, chain a few stitches over a gap to create a buttonhole that fits your chosen button.
Adding the Button:
- Sew the button on the opposite side of the flap where the buttonhole is, making sure it aligns with the hole for secure closure.
Weaving in Ends:
- Finish weaving in any remaining yarn tails.
Optional Lining:
- If desired, you can line the inside of the journal cover with fabric, sewn by hand or with a sewing machine.
