Crochet Dolphin Amigurumi Tutorial & Pattern

Making a crochet dolphin amigurumi is a delightful project! Starting with yarn and a hook, you first create the tail, then the body, and finally add little fins. As you stitch, the pieces come together, and the shape of a cute dolphin starts to emerge.

By the time you sew on the eyes, you can see it come to life. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon, and in the end, you have a soft, cuddly dolphin to share with someone special or keep for yourself. The joy of watching your creation take shape is truly satisfying!

Materials Needed:

  • Crochet Hook (5 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle
  • 12 mm Safety Eyes
  • Size 6 Yarn (Premier Parfait Chunky Yarn recommended, in green or blue)
  • Stuffing Material

Tail Fins

Save

Start with a magic ring. You can use the two-chain method; chain two, then proceed with single crochets into the first chain.

  • Round 1: Make 5 single crochets into the magic ring.
  • Round 2: Make 5 increases (10 stitches total) by doing two single crochets into each stitch.
  • Rounds 3-4: Single crochet around without increasing (10 stitches each round).

Save

After finishing the first tail fin, cut off leaving a small tail but do not pull through to finish. Make a second tail fin identical to the first one, maintaining the yarn attached for later steps.

Connecting Tail Fins

  • Insert stitch marker in the last stitch of the second fin.

Save

To Connect: Single crochet around the first fin's edge, then continue single crocheting around the second fin, connecting them.

  • Round 6: Decrease 10 times around the now-combined fins. Optionally, add a bit of stuffing.
  • Round 7: (3 single crochets, 1 decrease) twice (8 stitches).
  • Round 8: Single crochet around (8 stitches).
  • Round 9: Single crochet, then increase 4 times (12 stitches).

Save

Dolphin Body

  • Rounds 10-11: Single crochet around (12 stitches each).
  • Round 12: (2 single crochets, 1 increase) 4 times (16 stitches).
  • Rounds 13-14: Single crochet around (16 stitches each).
  • Round 15: (Single crochet increase) twice, then 12 single crochets, focusing increases near the tail for shaping.

Save

Continue with a pattern of a few increases in the initial stitches of the round for shaping, followed by regular single crochets, until the body starts forming.

Adjust the placement of increases as per the tension to ensure proper shaping.

Final shaping and Finishing Touches

Save

  • Round 23-25: Continue with increases followed by periods of single crochet to elongate the body.

Insert Safety Eyes between rounds 26 and 27.

  • Add stuffing progressively as the body closes.
  • Finish the body with decreases as instructed, tapering off towards the nose of the dolphin.
  • Sew the nose and any opening shut. Add fins and any additional features such as the head fin and side fins using single crochets and increases/decreases as per the shape required.

Save

Fins

  • Head Fin: Start with a magic ring, chain 4 single crochets, follow the increasing and decreasing pattern to shape the fin.
  • Side Fins: Similarly, use a magic ring, followed by increases, then rounds of single crochets to form the fins. Sew them below and slightly behind the eyes.
