Making The Chunky Shoulder Bag
Materials:
- Medium size acrylic yarn
- 6 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- fpsc: front post single crochet
Step by step Instructions
- Foundation Chain:
- Make a slip knot.
- Create a foundation chain of 34 chains (or the desired length, in multiples of 2, around 27-29 cm).
- Base of the Bag:
- Row 1: Starting from the 2nd loop from the hook, sc in each chain across. Mark the first sc. (34 sc)
- Row 2: Continue to sc on the bottom side of the starting chain.
- Total sc count at the end of the base is 68 (34 on each side).
- Create Rounds:
- Join the last sc to the first sc with a sl st.
- Round 1: Ch 1, sc into the same stitch. Continue sc around the base (68 sc).
- Round 2: Repeat Round 1.
- Start Body of the Bag:
- Round 3: Chainless dc in each stitch around.
- Chainless dc: Pull the loop longer, twist it, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull through (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops to finish the dc.
- Round 4: Start with a chainless dc, then work alternating front post double crochets and regular double crochets.
- Front post double crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook around the post of the dc from the previous round, yarn over and pull through (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
- Repeat this pattern until the body of the bag reaches the desired height (15-17 cm).
- Round 3: Chainless dc in each stitch around.
- Handle of the Bag:
- Determine the placement of the handles on each side (mark the positions on both sides of the bag).
- Using the same dc pattern as the body, work the stitches between the marked positions.
- Work back and forth to create the handle until it reaches the desired length (19-22 cm, or 15-18 rounds).
- Finish and Join Handles:
- Once the handles are complete, join them on the opposite side by sewing with a yarn needle.
- Hide the yarn ends inside the stitches to secure and tidy up the edges.
Final Touches:
If desired, add a lining to the bag or a magnetic clip for closure.
Notes:
- Ensure that multiple strands of yarn do not get tangled while working.
- Keep checking the alignment of stitches to maintain the texture and pattern.
