Step 4: Placing Safety Eyes and Embroidering the Mouth
- Pull up a loop and place a stitch marker in it.
- Attach the safety eyes between the 5th and 6th rows. Place the eyes so that there are an equal number of stitches on each side when the potato is laid flat.
- Use black yarn to embroider the mouth. Start 1 stitch to the inside and 1 stitch down from the eyes, then cross to the same stitch on the other side. Go down 1 row to the middle and pull the yarn into a smile shape. Secure and trim the ends.
Step 5: Continuation and Decreases
- Rounds 10-12: Sc in each stitch around (26 stitches).
- Round 13: Sc in the first 12 stitches, 2 dec over the next 4 stitches, sc in the last 10 stitches (24 stitches).
- Round 14: [1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, dec in the next] repeat around (18 stitches).
- Round 15: [1 sc in the next stitch, dec in the next] repeat around (12 stitches).
Step 6: Finishing the Potato
- Pull up a loop and place a stitch marker in it.
- Begin filling the potato with polyfill. Stuff it enough to make it plump but not so much that the stuffing shows through the stitches.
- Round 16: 6 dec (6 stitches).
- Use a darning needle to go through the outer loops of all 6 stitches and cinch the bottom closed. Weave in the end through the back of the potato.
Final Notes:
- Feel free to play around with the placement of the safety eyes to give your potato the desired expression.
- You may paint your desk if recording tutorials at home; feel free to ask your audience for color inspiration.
Enjoy your crocheting!
