How To Crochet Potato Amigurumi

Materials:

  • Size 4 acrylic yarn in brown
  • Crochet hook (4.25 mm)
  • Stitch marker
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Small amount of polyfill stuffing
  • Black yarn (for embroidering the mouth and eyes)
  • 9 mm safety eyes

Abbreviations:

  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec: decrease (single crochet 2 stitches together)

Pattern:

Step 1: Creating the Magic Ring

  1. Magic Ring: Create a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc into the magic ring (6 stitches).

Step 2: Forming the Potato Shape

  1. Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 stitches).
  2. Round 3: [1 sc in the next stitch, inc in the next] repeat around (18 stitches).
  3. Rounds 4-7: 1 sc in each stitch around (18 stitches).

Step 3: Adding Increases and Arms

  1. Round 8: [1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, inc in the next] repeat around (24 stitches).
  2. Round 9: This is the round to create the arms.
    • Sc in the first 6 stitches.
    • Chain 8, then slip stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook and into each of the following 5 chains.
    • Sc in the next 5 stitches.
    • 2 inc in the next 2 stitches.
    • Sc in the next 5 stitches.
    • Chain 8, then slip stitch into the 3rd chain from the hook and into each of the following 5 chains.
    • Sc in the last 6 stitches (26 stitches).

Step 4: Placing Safety Eyes and Embroidering the Mouth

  1. Pull up a loop and place a stitch marker in it.
  2. Attach the safety eyes between the 5th and 6th rows. Place the eyes so that there are an equal number of stitches on each side when the potato is laid flat.
  3. Use black yarn to embroider the mouth. Start 1 stitch to the inside and 1 stitch down from the eyes, then cross to the same stitch on the other side. Go down 1 row to the middle and pull the yarn into a smile shape. Secure and trim the ends.

  1. Rounds 10-12: Sc in each stitch around (26 stitches).
  2. Round 13: Sc in the first 12 stitches, 2 dec over the next 4 stitches, sc in the last 10 stitches (24 stitches).
  3. Round 14: [1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, dec in the next] repeat around (18 stitches).
  4. Round 15: [1 sc in the next stitch, dec in the next] repeat around (12 stitches).

Step 6: Finishing the Potato

  1. Pull up a loop and place a stitch marker in it.
  2. Begin filling the potato with polyfill. Stuff it enough to make it plump but not so much that the stuffing shows through the stitches.

  3. Round 16: 6 dec (6 stitches).
  4. Use a darning needle to go through the outer loops of all 6 stitches and cinch the bottom closed. Weave in the end through the back of the potato.
