Materials Needed:

  • Medium thickness acrylic or cotton yarn (e.g., Tex 468)
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for finishing)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Starting the Work:
    • Measure the circumference of the head or make a chain (foundation chain) of sufficient size. Leave a 15 cm tail of thread for finishing.
    • Create a slip knot: form an 'E', hold it, pass two fingers inside, turn the loop to the other side, pull it forming the knot, and pass the hook through the loop.
    • Tighten until it fits snugly on the hook.
  2. Foundation Chain:
    • Make a chain cord of the desired length, corresponding to the head circumference.
  3. First Row:
    • Turn the chain cord to the wrong side, inserting the hook into the back loop of the second chain from the hook.
    • Yarn over (yo), skip the first back loop, and insert the hook into the second loop.
    • Yo again, pull through, having three loops on the hook.
    • Pass the last loop through the other two loops on the hook.
    • Repeat: Yo, insert into the next back loop of the chain, yo, having three loops on the hook, and pass the last loop through the other two.
    • Continue this pattern to the end of the row.
  4. Subsequent Rows:
    • At the end of each row, chain one (ch 1) and turn.
    • Yo, insert the hook into the back loop of the first stitch from the previous row, yo again, and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook).
    • Pass the last loop through the other two loops.
    • Repeat this across the entire row.
  5. Repeating Rows:
    • Continue the same process, chaining one at the end of each row, turning the work, and working into the back loops of the previous row’s stitches.
    • Repeat these steps until the headband reaches the desired width:
      • Adult size: 9-10 cm
      • Child size: 8 cm
      • Baby size: 7 cm
  6. Finishing:
    • Ensure both thread tails (beginning and end) are on the same side. If not, add another row.
    • Lengthen the last chain to about 15 cm.
    • Cut the yarn, leaving the extended tail.
    • Use the yarn needle to thread the end for finishing.
  7. Joining the Ends:
    • Fold the band in half.
    • Place one half inside the other, aligning the edges neatly.
    • Sew across the edges by passing the needle back and forth through all four layers.
    • Tie a secure knot at the end to prevent unraveling.
  8. Final Touches:
    • Pass the beginning thread to the other side and knot it.
    • Reinforce the seam by sewing across it once more.
    • Hide the tails by passing them through the seam and trimming the excess.
  9. Turning the Headband:
    • Turn the headband inside out to hide the seam.
    • The headband is now complete and ready to wear!

Notes:

  • The false knitting stitch creates an elastic and textured finish, suitable for various headband sizes.
  • Adjust the length and width as needed to fit different head sizes.

Enjoy making your unique, elastic crochet headband with the false knitting stitch!
