Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Baby acrylic yarn (100% acrylic), pleasant to the touch. You'll need a little more than one skein, approximately one and a half skeins.
- Crochet hook size: 4mm
Pattern Overview:
This beanie is built from 4 wedges, knitted without severing the thread or sewing the wedges separately. It utilizes the technique of shortened (also referred to as elongated) rows.
Starting Off:
Cast on a chain of 80 stitches using your main yarn (without a contrasting thread).
- Row 1: Work as per the main thread, creating a chain of 80 stitches. The initial chain will measure approximately 42-43 cm, but the final product will narrow down to about 31-32 cm.
The Pattern:
- Row 2: This row will be immediately shortened. Do not knit the last 2 loops, leading to a total of 78 connecting stitches for this row.
- From the 3rd Row onward, continue with connecting loops for each row. Each new row begins with a lifting air loop, and you stick the hook behind the far bow.
Continue this pattern, reducing two stitches every subsequent row, until there are 18 unknitted loops, ending with a row that consists of 62 knitted loops.
- Note: There should be arrows indicating the direction of knitting and numbers above the arrows showing the number of loops in each row.
After reaching 18 unknitted loops with 62 knitted loops in the last row, proceed to knit 2 pairs of rows that knit this part completely, each having 80 loops, marking half of the Wedge.
Construction of the Beanie:
Wedge Construction: Each wedge should be approximately 11.5 cm in width. After completing the half wedge, mirror the process for the second half.
- Start with a row that does not complete 18 loops, then a row shortening by 2 until a row that does not complete 2 loops.
Joining: For joining the hat without a contrasting thread, Nadya suggests a unique seam that is not noticeable from either side.
Finishing:
- Once all 4 Wedges are completed, the final dimensions should give a hat circumference of about 44 cm (ideal for a 55 cm head, though the elastic band adjusts well for larger sizes).
- Nadya provides a specific technique to hide yarn knots inconspicuously and details on how to close the hat and hide the tails properly.
Additional Tips:
- For a more snug fit or a larger size, Nadya suggests adjusting the number of complete rows in the central part of the wedge.
- The pattern supports customization according to one's preference or the required size.
