Materials Needed:
- 7 mm hook (for weight 6 yarn) or ⅚ mm hook (for weight ⅘ yarn)
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker
- Weight 6 Super bulky yarn (or weight ⅘ yarn; adjust hook accordingly)
- Stuffing
- 10 mm safety eyes (2 pieces)
Notes:
- For this tutorial, a weight 5 bulky yarn is used, resulting in a slightly smaller ghost.
- Adjust hooks and yarn size as needed.
Instructions
Start With Magic Ring:
- Place the yarn end over three fingers.
- Loop it over the back of your fingers, creating an X.
- Go under the first strand and pull up the second strand with the hook.
- Twist the loop and pull through the same strand to create the magic ring.
Round 1:
- Place 8 single crochets into the magic ring.
- Pull the ring tail to tighten.
Round 2:
- 1 single crochet in the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the second stitch - repeat around (12 stitches total).
Rounds 3 & 4:
- 1 single crochet in each of the 12 stitches around.
Round 5:
- 1 single crochet in the first stitch, 3 single crochets in the next stitch. Remove hook, insert into the first single crochet of the 3, pull the loop through to create a bobble. Repeat this process with 1 single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, then another bobble after the fifth stitch.
- You should now have 2 bobbles (arms) and 12 stitches in total.
Rounds 6 & 7:
- 1 single crochet in each stitch around (12 stitches).
Add the Eyes:
- Insert two 10 mm safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4, placing them 3 stitches apart, usually above the little arms.
- Secure the eyes with the safety backs.
Round 8 (Ruffle Edge):
- Slip stitch in the front loop only of the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the front loop only of the next stitch - repeat around.
Final Round (Decrease):
- Decrease all the way around using the back loops: insert the hook into the back loop of the first stitch and pull up a loop, then into the back loop of the next stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all three loops - repeat until end.
Close the Bottom:
- Cut the yarn leaving a tail.
- Pull the tail through the last loop on the hook to secure.
- Stuff the ghost through the bottom hole.
Using a tapestry needle, sew the bottom closed by threading through the outer loops.
- Hide any remaining yarn tails inside the ghost.
Finishing Touches
- Shape and adjust your ghost as necessary.
- Ensure all parts are securely stitched and the ghost is evenly stuffed.
Final Note:
- The white ghost in the reference uses a weight 6 super bulky yarn which results in a slightly larger ghost compared to the blue one (weight 5 yarn).
- Adjust stuffing strategies based on the thickness of the yarn used.
