Crochet Cacti Amigurumi
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned crocheter, creating these tiny friends is both fun and rewarding. Plus, they make perfect gifts for your loved ones, adding a personal touch to any room or desk they grace.
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (in green or turquoise for the cactus)
- E hook (3.5 millimeters)
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn or similar
- Six-strand white embroidery floss for the face
- Needle with a blunt end and a bent tip (ideal for amigurumi)
Pattern:
Foundation and Body:
Start with a Slip Knot: Make a slip knot on your hook.
Foundation Chain: Chain 16.
- Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Continue single crocheting in each chain across. You will have 15 stitches.
- Row 2 - 11: Chain 1 and turn. Work in back loops only and single crochet across each stitch. You will maintain 15 stitches per row. This creates a ribbed effect to simulate the cactus's natural ribbing.
Creating the Tube:
- After completing Row 11, fold the piece so the foundation chain and the last row you worked are next to each other.
- Slip Stitch Edges Together: Working through the back loops of Row 11 and the remaining loops of the foundation chain, slip stitch across to join the two edges together, creating a tube.
Closing the Top:
- Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Use a needle to make a running stitch around the top open end of the tube.
- Pull tightly to cinch the top closed and secure with a knot. Weave in the end inside the tube.
Adding the Face:
Use white embroidery floss to create the face.
- Mouth: Stitch a mouth using a series of fly stitches to form a "U" or "V" shape.
- Eyes: Create each eye with a stitch that mirrors the mouth's shape, placed above on either side.
Adding the Spines:
- Using yarn (same color as the cactus or contrasting for effect), stitch through the remaining front loops left visible from working in the back loops only.
- Form loops by bringing the yarn through and cutting at desired length. Repeat to cover the cactus body as desired.
- Optionally secure each loop with a knot for durability, especially if meant for play rather than display.
Tips:
- Adjust the tightness of your slip stitches when joining the tube to ensure the cactus does not cinch unnaturally.
- Make spines denser at the top for a more natural cactus appearance.
- Personalize the face by experimenting with different placements and expressions.
