Materials:

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in “Ecru” (850g, 1600yds)
  • Size G (4mm) crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

  • 18 stitches & 16 rows = 4″ in single crochet

Sizes:

  • Bag (big): approx. 17″ width, 13″ height, 5″ depth
  • Bag (small): approx. 13″ width, 10″ height, 4″ depth

Abbreviations:

  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet

Bag base:

  1. Chain 41 (31).
  2. Insert hook into second chain from hook and crochet a single crochet, single crochet into every chain (total 40, 30 stitches).
  3. Chain 1 at the end of the row, turn your work, and crochet one single crochet into each stitch of the previous row. (Repeat 49 (39) times until you reach row 50 (40).
  4. Do NOT cut the yarn.

Body of the bag:

  1. Crochet one single crochet around your base. Place one stitch marker into every corner stitch.
  2. Crochet 1 round of single crochet stitches around your bag base.
  3. For the next round, crochet 5 single crochet, then crochet 2 single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat from * around the base and make sure to place (1 single crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 single crochet) into every corner stitch.
  4. Alternate the previous two steps for the next rounds until you reach your desired height. Your bag should slowly start to fold upward.

Connecting body and base:

  1. Now slip stitch the bottom of your last row to the top of your second last row all around the bag.
  2. You can cut the yarn now.

Straps:

  1. Choose your start point, crochet a slip knot, and pull through. Follow steps 1-10 provided in the previous response to create the straps.

Fringe:

To create the look of the finished example, you may wish to create fringes and tie them around the perimeter of the bag. Cut lengths of yarn and fold them over. Insert your crochet hook from back to front through the bag’s hole and pull the folded center of the yarn length through. Then pull the ends of the yarn through this loop and tighten.
