 Classic Newsboy Hat - Newborn Size

Materials Needed

  • Cotton yarn
  • Tape measure
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Buttons (optional)
  • Stitch marker
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Pattern Instructions

Magic Ring and Round 1:

  1. Create a magic ring.
  2. Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  3. Work 12 double crochets (dc) into the magic ring.
  4. Pull the yarn tail to close the ring.
  5. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (12 stitches)

Round 2:

  1. Chain 2.
  2. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch around.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (24 stitches)

Round 3:

  1. Chain 2.
  2. 1 double crochet in the first stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * around.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (36 stitches)

Round 4:

  1. Chain 2.
  2. 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * around.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (48 stitches)

Round 5:

  1. Chain 2.
  2. 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * around.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (60 stitches)

Body of the Hat:

  1. For Rounds 6 and onward, repeat with no increases:
    • Chain 2.
    • Work 1 double crochet into each stitch around.
    • Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
  2. Continue until the hat measures 4.4 to 4.5 inches in height.

Decrease Round:

  1. Chain 1.
  2. Work 1 half double crochet (hdc) in each of the next 3 stitches, then 2 half double crochets together (hdc2tog). Repeat from * to * around.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (48 stitches)

Brim:

  1. From the center front, mark 24 stitches on either side with stitch markers.
  2. Attach yarn to the first marked stitch and chain 1.
  3. Work 1 half double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches, then 2 half double crochets into the next stitch.
  4. Continue this pattern until you reach the next stitch marker.
  5. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch, then chain 1 and turn.
  6. Repeat this pattern for three rows, ending with a slip stitch and turn on each row.

Finishing the Brim:

  1. Chain 26 for the brim strap.
  2. Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  3. Work 1 double crochet into the third chain from the hook and into each of the next 24 chains.
  4. Work 4 double crochets into the last chain.
  5. Turn and work 1 double crochet in each of the next 24 stitches on the opposite side.
  6. Work 2 double crochets into the last chain.
  7. Join with a slip stitch and fasten off.

Assembly:

  1. Attach buttons (if desired) to the strap and brim intersections.
  2. Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
