Crochet Mermaid Dreams Pillow
Materials Required:
- #4 worsted weight yarn approximately 100 yards each of 3 different colors (A, B, C)
- US Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain a gauge
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- 14” pillow insert
- Optional: 14” zipper in a color that matches color A, sewing needle & thread
Measurements:
The finished pillow should measure 14" square.
Gauge:
2 shells (each shell is defined as 5 dc in the same stitch) and 6 rows = 3”.
Abbreviations:
- ch(s) – chain(s)
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sl st – slip stitch
Instructions:
- With color A, ch 96, then sl st to join to the 1st ch.
- Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, sl st to join to 1st sc – you should have 96 sc.
- Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the 1st st, skip 2 sts, 1 shell in next st, skip 2 sts, *1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 shell in next st, skip 2 sts; repeat from * around, sl st to join to the 1st sc – 16 sc + 16 shells.
- Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts, *1 shell in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts; repeat from * around, 2 dc in the same st as ch 3 + 2 dc at the beginning of round (these sts will count as 1 shell), sl st to join to top of ch 3 – 16 sc + 16 shells.
- Rounds 4-9: Repeat rounds 2-3 three times, then fasten off color A after round 9.
- With color B: Rounds 10-17: Repeat rounds 2-3 four times, then fasten off B after round 17.

- To close the top: Turn the pillow inside out and fold in half with the st you left off on at the end. Insert your hook into the 1st st on both sides and make 1 sc. Continue to work this way across making 1 sc in each st, going through both sides. Fasten off when you reach the other end.
- Sew the zipper to the bottom of the pillow if you're using one.
Please Note: The pillow is worked in joined rounds from bottom up. You can choose to sew a zipper into the bottom to make the pillow insert easily removable for washing. If you do not want to sew a zipper in, the bottom can be stitched shut with a yarn needle and a scrap of A.
