Crochet Your Own Beanie A Fun and EASY Tutorial

Making The Colorful Crochet Beanie

Materials Needed:

  1. Yarn (Nako Denim or any other similar yarn)
  2. Crochet hooks: 4.5 mm and 5 mm
  3. Pair of scissors
  4. Measuring tape
  5. Stitch markers

Pattern Instructions

1. Foundation Chain:

  • Start with a slip knot using a 4.5 mm crochet hook.
  • Make a foundation chain. Chain as many stitches as needed for the desired height of the hem. For the sample size, make 18 chains.

2. Row 1:

  • Start in the second chain from the hook and make a single crochet (SC) in each chain across the row.

3. Row 2 and beyond (until desired length):

  • Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • From this row onward, work in the back loop only.
  • Make one SC in each back loop across, except for the last stitch which should go through both loops to ensure a neat edge.
  • Repeat this until the hem reaches the desired circumference for the beanie. For a 2-3 year old, the hem should be about 49 cm.

4. Joining the Hem Sides:

  • Fold the hem in half and join both sides with slip stitches. Use the back loop of the side closest to you and both loops on the other side for the last slip stitch.

5. Main Part of the Beanie:

  • Change to a 5 mm crochet hook.
  • Optionally, change the yarn color.
  • Chain 1 and work in rounds from now on.

6. Round 1:

  • Work a single crochet (SC) into each stitch around the top edge of the hem. Alternate stitches by working into the space between rows and then into the stitches of the rows.

7. Round 2 and continuing (Half double crochet pattern):

  • Chain 1.
  • Skip the first stitch and work 2 half double crochets (HDC) into the second stitch.
  • Skip one stitch and work 2 HDC into the following stitch.
  • Repeat this pattern around. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first stitch (not in the chain).

8. Rounds 3 and beyond (until desired height):

  • Chain 1.
  • Follow the same 2 HDC pattern, working into the spaces between the previous round's stitches.
  • Repeat until the beanie reaches the desired height (20 cm for the example).

9. Decreasing:

  • Start decreasing rounds to shape the top of the beanie.
  • Round 1 of decreasing: Decrease every 4th V-stitch by working 2 HDC together.
  • Round 2 of decreasing: Decrease every 3rd V-stitch.
  • Round 3 of decreasing: Decrease every 2nd V-stitch.
  • Final decreasing round: Decrease in every V-stitch by working 2 HDC together.

10. Finishing:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
  • Use a yarn needle to weave the tail through the front loops of the last round of stitches.
  • Pull the yarn tight to close the top hole of the beanie.
  • Weave in all remaining yarn tails securely inside the beanie.
  • Optionally, add a pom-pom or label for a finishing touch.

Final Measurements:

  • The height of the beanie is approximately 23 cm.
  • When the hem is folded in half, the height will be about 18 cm.
