Special Notes

  • You will be alternating rounds of mesh (spaces) and textured rows using a two-row/stripe repeat.
  • Each color change forms a new horizontal stripe.
  • The scarf is worked horizontally, with a long starting chain for the scarf’s length.
  • Fringe at the ends is optional.

Pattern

1. Foundation

  1. Chain:
    • Make a slip knot.
    • Ch 221 (or an even number for the desired length + 1 extra turning ch).
    • (Example used: 220 + 1 = 221 ch.)
      Save

2. Row 1: Mesh Row

  1. Double Crochet in Back Bump:
    • Turn chain over. Insert hook into the back “bump” of the 4th ch from the hook (counts as first space).
    • Dc, ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch; repeat across the row.
    • End with dc in last ch.
    • (You will have a row of alternating dc and ch-1 spaces.)

3. Row 2: Textured Motif Row

  1. Chain and Turn:
    • Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn.
  2. Motif in Each Space:
    • In each ch-1 space from previous row:
      • Yarn over, insert hook into sp, pull up a loop to dc height (counts as once).
      • Yarn over, insert into same sp, pull up another loop (twice). (You now have several loops.)
      • Yarn over, pull through all loops but one, yarn over, pull through last two loops (like a “mini cluster”).
        Save
      • Ch 1.
    • Repeat for each space.
    • At the very end: After the final motif, do not ch 1, simply dc into the top of starting ch (the edge).
    • Note: For a denser motif, yarn over and pull up a loop in the motif up to three times for a thicker look.

4. Row 3: Color Change (Optional)

  1. Switch Colors or Continue:
    • If changing color, cut yarn after Row 2.
    • Attach second color with a secure knot at the end of the row.
    • Ch 3, turn.
      Save
  2. Repeat Mesh Row:
    • Dc in same sp (the space between motifs), ch 1, skip next sp, dc in next sp across.
    • End with dc in top of last motif or chain.

5. Row 4: Repeat Textured Motif Row

  1. Ch 3, turn.
  2. In each ch-1 sp: (Yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop to height; repeat once more; yarn over, pull through all but the last loop, yarn over, pull through remaining two); ch 1.
  3. Repeat across; at end, do not ch 1, just dc in edge dc.

6. Repeat Rows 3–4

Continue alternating Mesh Rows (dc, ch 1, skip 1) and Textured Motif Rows (clusters with ch 1) for desired width, changing colors every two rows or as preferred.

  • Example: Blue mesh, white motif, blue mesh, white motif, ending with blue mesh for a 14 cm wide, 170 cm long scarf.

7. Finishing

  1. Fasten Off:
    • After the last row, FO and weave in all yarn tails using a needle.
      Save
  2. Optional Fringe:
    • Cut strands of yarn (approx. 30 cm long).
    • For each row’s edge, take 5 strands (mix colors for a striped effect), fold in half, and use a hook to attach to the edge (pull loop through, draw ends through loop, and tighten).
    • Space fringe evenly across the width at both ends.
    • Trim fringe and (optionally) press with an iron for a sleek finish.
      Save

Conclusion

This unisex, two-tone crochet scarf uses simple mesh and cluster motifs for an attractive, modern effect. The stitch pattern is relaxing and fast, making it suitable for beginners, gift-makers, and anyone wanting to enjoy the beauty of handmade scarves.

Pattern Corrections & Tips

  • Correction: Be sure your starting foundation is an even number +1 for the turn.
  • Tip: For a perfectly even edge, always end mesh and motif rows with a dc in the edge (top of previous row or chain).
  • Tip: If your clusters seem tight, work your loops a bit taller before pulling through.
  • Tip: Alternate stripes in whatever colors and widths you choose.
  • Tip: Gently steam or press the finished scarf for the neatest appearance.
