Materials Needed:

  • Any yarn type; five shades suggested
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook

Center (Round 1):

1 Save

  • Start with brown yarn; make a magic ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  • Work 11 double crochets into the ring.
  • Pull ring tight, join with a slip stitch to the third chain of starting ch-3. You should have 12 double crochets.

Round 2:

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  • Work an increase (2 double crochets) into each stitch around.
  • Join with a slip stitch. You should have 24 double crochets.
  • Fasten off brown yarn.

2 Save

Petals (Layer 1):

  • Join dark yellow yarn with a slip stitch in any front loop.
  • Chain 2, work one double crochet, one treble crochet in the same space.
  • Chain 3, slip stitch in the top of the treble (picot made).
  • Work another treble, one double crochet in the same space.
  • Chain 2, slip stitch in the same space to finish petal.
  • Slip stitch in the next front loop to start the next petal. Repeat steps 2-5 around.
  • Join with a slip stitch after last petal. Fasten off.

Base for Petals 2nd Layer:

  • Use same dark yellow; work behind petals into back loops from previous rounds to create 12 chain-4 spaces around using slip stitches and chain 4s.

Petals (Layer 2):

3 Save

  • Use lighter yellow; join yarn in any chain-4 space.
  • Chain 2, work one double crochet, two treble crochets in the same space.
  • After the second treble, chain 3, slip stitch in the top two loops (picot made).
  • Work another treble crochet, one double crochet in the same space, chain 2, and slip stitch to complete the petal.
  • Repeat this process in each chain-4 space around. Join and fasten off.

Granny Square Base:

  1. With green yarn, work chain 5, single crochet in space between two petals repeat around to create 12 chain-5 spaces.

First Round of Square:

  • Join green yarn in any chain-5 space; chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  • Work 2 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets in the same space (corner made).
  • Chain 1, skip to next chain-5 space, work 3 double crochets repeat this around, making corners in each chain-5 space.
  • Join with slip stitch to the first chain-3.

4 Save

Subsequent Rounds:

  • Slip stitch to the first corner space. Chain 3, work corners (2 sets of 3 double crochets separated by chain 2) and sides as established by first round, adjusting the number of chain-1 spaces and 3-double crochet groups to fit each side as your square grows.
  • Continue until you achieve the desired size of your granny square.

Finishing:

  • Block your work by wetting it slightly and pinning it in shape to dry for a neat finish.
