Materials Needed:
- Double knit yarn (100g/330m) - You will need approximately 50g: 1 main colour (e.g., pink) and 1 secondary colour (e.g., white).
- 4mm crochet hook.
Pattern Overview:
- 1 to 2 years
- 2 to 4 years
- 4 to 6 years
- 6 years and above
Starting Chain and First Row:
Create a slip knot with your main colour yarn.
Chain 29 for sizes 1 to 2 & 4 to 6 years, chain 30 for size 2 to 4 years, and chain 31 for size 6 years+.
- To switch colours, make the chain a bit larger at the end, pull the secondary colour through the last chain, and then tighten the main colour yarn.
- For two colours: Chain 19 (for sizes 1 to 2 & 2 to 4 years) or 21 (for sizes 4 to 6 & 6 years+) in the secondary colour for a total of either 48 or 50 chains depending on the size.
- For one colour: Simply chain 50 without changing colours.
- Starting from the third chain from the hook, work a half-double crochet in each chain across until there are 19 (or 21 based on size) stitches in the secondary colour, followed by stitches in the main colour for the remainder of the row.
The last half-double crochet stitch is worked by introducing the next colour yarn. Through the loops on your hook to switch colours seamlessly.
Row 2 and Beyond:
- Chain 1 and turn your work. Begin working in single crochet for 5 stitches, marking the first stitch with a stitch marker or a piece of yarn.
- Switch to half-double crochets in the back loop only for the rest of the row except for the last five stitches, which will be single crochets.
- Alternate colours as necessary, keeping in mind to switch colours at the last yarn-over of the last half-double crochet in each colour segment.
Finishing:
Continue the pattern (back loop half-double crochet for the main part, with single crochet stitches at the beginning and end of each row) until you reach the recommended number of rows for your size (42 for 1 to 2 years, 44 for 2 to 4 years, 46 for 4 to 6 years, and 48 for 6 years+).
The finished beanie sizes should measure approximately 25cm (1-2 years), 26cm (2-4 years), 27cm (4-6 years), and 28cm (6 years+) in height.
- Joining the Hat: Use a yarn needle to stitch the ends of the hat together. Ensure to match the colours appropriately as you sew.
- Closing the top: After joining the sides, use the yarn tail to weave in and out around the top edge of the hat. Pull tight to gather, then secure and weave in any loose ends.
- Optional pom pom: Attach a pom pom at the top of the beanie for an extra flourish.
