How To Crochet Oversized Cable Sweater

Materials:

  • Yarn: 5.5 skeins of Impeccable Yarn in the color "Barney".
  • Hook: 6 mm crochet hook.
  • Additional tools: Stitch markers, yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors.

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • fpdc: front post double crochet
  • bpdc: back post double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Pattern:

Ribbing:

  1. Small/Medium Size: Work 68 rows of ribbing.
  2. Large/Extra-Large/Double XL: Work 76 rows of ribbing.
  3. Make a foundation chain of 20.
  4. Row 1: Ch 20, sc in each back bump of the chain. (20).
  5. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the back loop only across. (20).
  6. Repeat Row 2 until you have the required number of rows as per your size.

Front Panels:

  1. Ch 1, sc evenly along the long edge of the ribbing; you should have 68 (or 76) sc.
  2. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), turn, dc in each sc across. (68 or 76 dc).
  3. For Small/Medium:
    • Work 19 dc.
  4. For Large/XL/XXL:
    • Work 23 dc.
  5. Begin front post stitches:
    • Work 1 fpdc.
    • Work 2 dc, then 2 fpdc.
    • Work 4 dc.
  6. Begin cable pattern:
    • Work 3 front post tr, skip 3 stitches, work 3 front post tr.
    • Work 4 dc.
  7. Continue pattern:
    • Repeat row 4 steps till the end of row.
  8. Chain up 2, turn, place 1 dc in each stitch across; repeat cable pattern until you reach the desired length for your front panel.
  9. End with a single crochet row. Leave a long tail and cut the yarn.

Back Panels:

  1. Repeat the steps for the front panel to create the second back panel.

Seaming Shoulders:

  1. Align the front panels to the ribbing, and use a slip stitch, single crochet, or mattress stitch to join the shoulder seams.

Sleeves:

  1. For Small/Medium, the width measures 10 inches and the lengths 18 inches.
  2. Make a foundation chain of 20 and repeat the ribbing instructions for 34 rows.
  3. Single crochet along the edge, then ch 2, and turn work.
  4. Begin the pattern as follows:
    • Small/Medium: Dc in next 4 stitches.
    • Back post dc along the cable stitches.
    • Finish with dc at the end of each row.
  5. Repeat for a total of 25 rows.
  6. Attach the sleeves to the body by aligning the top center with shoulder seams, seaming along the sides, and under the arms.
  7. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Side Seams:

  1. Fold the sides with the shoulder seams aligned.
  2. Seam along the sides from the body to the sleeve ribbing.

Finishing Touches:

  1. Weave in all ends.
  2. Optional: Add neckline, cowl, or other embellishments of choice.
