You'll start by crocheting the turtle's body and shell, then effortlessly connect them with clever crochet techniques. Along the way, you'll craft cute fins and a sweet little head, watching as your turtle's personality begins to shine through.

Materials Needed:

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • 12 mm safety eyes
  • Stuffing
  • Two colors of yarn (green for the body and another color for the shell)

Turtle Body:

Start with Green Yarn:

Create a slip knot; chain two to form a magic ring.

  • In the magic ring, make 6 single crochets.
  • Next row: Increase in each stitch (12 stitches total).
  • Add a stitch marker (a piece of scrap yarn works).

Save

  • For the next row, repeat single crochet, then increase six times (18 stitches total).
  • Single crochet for two rounds without increasing.
  • Decrease six times in the next row (12 stitches).
  • Insert the safety eyes between rows three and four, and then secure them.
  • Decrease in every stitch for six stitches, add stuffing.

Save

  • Single crochet around for six stitches to close the opening. Finish off, no need for a long tail.

Fins (Make 4):

  • Using the green yarn, create 6 single crochets in a magic ring.
  • Increase in each stitch for the next row for a total of 12 stitches.
  • Single crochet one, increase six times (18 stitches).

Save

  • Fold the fin in half and join by single crocheting along the edges to create the shape.
  • Leave a tail for sewing, then weave in the end.

Shell:

Switch to Brown Yarn (or chosen color):

Starting again with the magic ring, create 6 single crochets.

  • Increase in each stitch for a total of 12 stitches.
  • Single crochet one, increase six times (18 stitches).
  • Perform two single crochets followed by an increase, repeat six times.
  • Single crochet in each stitch for two rounds.
  • In the next round, work in the front loops only, three single crochets, then increase, repeat six times.

Save

  • To create the color transition to green, start one single crochet in brown, finish the stitch with green yarn, and cut off the brown yarn.
  • Work in the back loops, attaching fins by placing one single crochet through both back loops and the fin, continue attaching all four fins in this manner.
  • Continue with two single crochets and a decrease around using green yarn for a snug fit of the shell parts.
  • After completing the shell and attaching all parts, add stuffing to the shell.

Finishing Touches:

Save

  • After attaching all parts and ensuring the shell is well-stuffed, decrease around to close the opening of the shell.
  • Sew the end shut and weave in any loose ends to finalize your turtle.
