Crochet Book Sleeve Pattern:
Magic Circle & First Row:
- Make a magic circle.
- Chain 2 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Make 3 double crochet into the magic circle.
- Chain 1, then make 3 more clusters of 3 double crochets separated by 1 chain into the magic circle to complete 4 clusters (creating a square).
- Pull the magic circle close.
- Use a half double crochet in the top of the first double crochet to close the row.
If changing colors, insert the new color before completing the half double crochet.
Second Row:
- Chain 2 with the new color and start turning your work for each new row.
- In the first space (created by the half double crochet), make 3 double crochets.
- For each corner space created by the chain 1 in the previous round, make 3 double crochets, chain 1, and 3 more double crochets in the same space.
- Continue around, following the pattern.
- Join the row with a half double crochet and change colors if desired.
Third Row & Beyond:
- Repeat the pattern, working 3 double crochets in each space between clusters and (3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets) in each corner space.
- Continue adding rows and changing colors as desired until the granny square is large enough to fit a book, laptop, or Kindle.
- As you work, weave in or trim any tails that are sticking out.
Assembly:
- Once you've reached the desired size, fold the crochet piece into an envelope shape.
- Sew one of the sides completely using the tail from the last row.
- Cut another piece of yarn and sew the opposite side, leaving the top open.
Button (Heart-Shaped Button Tutorial):
- Create a magic circle.
- Chain 2, make 3 triple crochets, 4 double crochets, another triple crochet (this starts one of the heart's lobes).
- Make 4 more double crochets, 3 triple crochets, chain 2, and then slip stitch into the magic ring to form a heart shape.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and tighten the magic circle to define the heart shape.
Finishing Touches:
- Attach the heart button to the book sleeve in the desired spot by feeding the tail through the stitches and tying it inside the sleeve.
- Use the button and the natural holes of the granny square to close the book sleeve.
