Materials:

  • Approximately 250-270 grams of 100% soft cotton yarn for the top.
  • Approximately 550 grams of 100% soft cotton yarn for the dress version.
  • A 3mm hook (or size suitable for the yarn selected).
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Tape measure.

Gauge: Provided measurements in inches to adjust accordingly.

Steps:

1. Top Part:

Foundation Chain:

  1. Start with a slipknot and chain the length needed to cover the bust, adding 3 extra chains (for slip stitches).

Row 1: Slip Stitches
2. Skip the first chain, slip stitch into the second chain from the hook, and continue slip stitches loosely to the end of the row.

  1. Place a stitch marker in the very first stitch to keep track of rows.
  2. Chain 1, turn your work.

Row 2: Half Double Crochets (HDC)
5. Yarn over, go into the back loop only of the first stitch, and make a half double crochet (HDC).

  1. Continue making HDC in the back loop only across the row.
  2. Chain 1, turn your work.

Row 3: Slip Stitches in the Back Loop Only
8. Slip stitch in the back loop only across the row.

  1. Chain 1, turn your work.

Row 4: HDC in the Back Loop Only
10. Repeat Row 2 steps.

  1. Continue alternating between Rows 2 and 3 until the panel fits around your bust (remember to stretch to fit tightly).

Seaming:
12. Fold the top panel with the right sides together (ribbing side more prominent).

  1. Chain 1, slip stitch through the back loop of each stitch on both sides to seam.

2. Lower Part (Skirt of Top/Dress):

Single Crochet Border:
14. With the right side facing, single crochet around the bottom of the top part.

  1. Place single crochets in each row along the side (one in HDC row and one in raised row).

Increase V-Stitch Round:
16. Chain 4 (counts as DC and ch1), DC in the same stitch (first V-stitch), chain 1, DC in the same place again.

  1. Skip the next single crochet, V-stitch in the next stitch (DC, ch1, DC, ch1, DC).
  2. Repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch to the third chain of the starting ch-4.

Subsequent V-Stitch Rounds:
19. Slip stitch into the chain space of the V-stitch, chain 4, and make a V-stitch (DC, ch1, DC) in each chain space around.

  1. Continue in V-stitch pattern (without increases) until the skirt reaches your desired length.
  2. Slip stitch to third chain of starting ch-4 at the end of each round.

3. Scalloped Edging:

Shell Stitch:
22. Slip stitch into the chain space, chain 3, and make 6 more DC in the same space (7 DC per shell).

  1. Single crochet in the next chain space, shell in the next, and repeat all the way around.
  2. Adjust at the end to ensure shells are evenly spaced and finish by slip stitching into the third chain of the starting chain-3.
  3. Chain 1, cut the yarn, pull to tightand weave in the ends.

4. Straps:

Determining Strap Position:
26. Try on the top, use stitch markers to mark strap positions evenly across the front and back.

Creating the Straps:
27. Attach yarn at the marked position, chain the desired length (about 27-27.5 inches or 153 chains).

  1. Skip the first chain, single crochet in the second chain from the hook and across.
  2. Slip stitch to the next single crochet on the edge of the top to secure, chain 1, cut yarn, and pull to secure.
  3. Repeated as needed for all strap positions.

Final Touches:
31. Weave in all loose ends and enjoy your handmade crochet babydoll top!
