Materials

  • Number 4 Medium weight yarn
    • Main color: Black (choose any color for demonstration)
    • 5 additional colors
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Pattern Steps

Round 1

  1. Start with a slip knot and chain 5.
  2. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
  3. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  4. Work 2 dc into the center of the ring (holding onto the yarn tail).
  5. Chain 2.
  6. Work 3 dc into the ring.
  7. Chain 2.
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 two more times.
  9. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join.
  10. Slip stitch to the chain-2 space. Chain 1, cut the yarn and pull through to fasten off.

Round 2

  1. Join new color in any chain-2 space.
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  3. Work 2 dc into the same chain-2 space.
  4. Chain 2.
  5. Work 3 dc into the same chain-2 space.
  6. Work the following into each chain-2 space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (for each corner).
  7. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join.
  8. Slip stitch to the chain-2 space, chain 1, cut the yarn and pull through to fasten off.

Round 3

  1. Join new color in any chain-2 space.
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  3. Work 2 dc into the same chain-2 space.
  4. Chain 2.
  5. Work 3 dc into the same chain-2 space.
  6. Between corners, work 3 dc into the space between clusters.
  7. Repeat corner stitches (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) and between corner stitches (3 dc in each space between clusters around).
  8. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join.
  9. Slip stitch to the chain-2 space, chain 1, cut the yarn and pull through to fasten off.

Round 4

  1. Repeat instructions for Round 3, but note there will now be two spaces between the corners to work 3 dc clusters into.
  2. Chain 3, work 3 dc in each only between clusters.
  3. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join.
  4. Slip stitch to the chain-2 space, chain 1, cut the yarn and pull through to fasten off.

Round 5

  1. Repeat instructions for Round 4, but note there will now be three spaces between the corners to work 3 dc clusters into.
  2. Chain 3, work 3 dc in each only between clusters.
  3. Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain-3 to join.
  4. Slip stitch to the chain-2 space, chain 1, cut the yarn and pull through to fasten off.

Joining Squares

  1. Use the main color yarn and start at any chain-2 space of the first square.
  2. Chain 3, work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
  3. Continue working 3 dc clusters in each space, corners will be (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
  4. Do not work the last corner, just ch 1 instead.
  5. Join squares by slip stitching through the chain-2 space on adjacent square, then work the remaining dc's.
  6. Continue until all squares are joined.

Border

  1. Use main color yarn.
  2. Work single crochet (sc) in each stitch around.
  3. In chain-2 corners, work 4 sc.
  4. Slip stitch into the first sc to finish.

Adding Fringe (Optional)

  1. Cut strips of yarn (about 12 inches).
  2. Fold in half, and loop through edge stitch.
  3. Loop and pull through to fasten.
  4. Trim to even out ends.
