Beginning the Hat

  1. Create a Magic Ring:
    • Start by pulling your yarn through to form a loop.
    • Chain 1 to secure the magic ring.
  2. Forming the First Cluster:
    • Chain 3.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into the ring, draw up a loop, pull through two loops.
    • Yarn over, draw up another loop, pull through two loops (you should have 3 loops on the hook).
    • Yarn over one more time, draw up a loop and pull through all three loops on the hook.
  3. Creating Clusters:
    • Continue forming clusters with 2 chains in between each cluster.
    • Create a total of 6 clusters in the magic ring.
  4. Tighten and Join:
    • Pull the yarn tail to tighten the ring.
    • Slip stitch into the top of the third chain of the starting chain-3 to close the round.

Building the Hat

  1. Round 1 (Increase Round):
    • Chain 3.
    • Make a cluster in the space between clusters.
    • Chain 2.
    • Repeat placing two clusters in each space around (total of 12 clusters).
  2. Round 2 (Increase):
    • Chain 3.
    • Chain 2 more and make one cluster.
    • Alternate between 1 cluster and 2 clusters in each space around (total of 18 clusters).
  3. Round 3 (Increase):
    • Chain 3.
    • Chain 2 more and make one cluster.
    • Alternate between 1 cluster, 1 cluster, and 2 clusters in each space around (total of 24 clusters).

Continuing the Pattern

  1. Rounds 4 to 9:
    • Chain 3.
    • Do not increase; place one cluster in every space around.
    • Ensure to chain 2 between clusters.
    • You will maintain a total of 24 clusters per round.
  2. Slip Stitch Continuously:
    • Slip into the next space to keep a seamless design.
    • Continue until you complete six more rounds with one cluster in each space.

Finishing Off

  1. Adding Border:
    • Chain 1, then do two single crochets in each chained space around the hat.
    • Complete two rounds of single crochet.
  2. Final Steps:
    • Slip stitch to join.
    • Cut the yarn and pull through to secure.
    • Weave in all the ends using a yarn needle.
    • Knot and weave through the tight stitches to hide the ends securely.

Conclusion

Congratulations on completing your adorable baby hat! This unique pattern, with its elegant cluster stitches, offers a delicate and snug fit for a newborn's head. Your finished product should measure roughly five inches in diameter for the crown and seven inches across, perfect for zero to three months old babies.
