This pattern features four Tunisian crochet panels, with two different color arrangements, accented by cross-stitch floral motifs. Perfect for intermediate crocheters, the Summer Rose Afghan is an exciting project that’s as rewarding as it is eye-catching.

Pattern Breakdown and Steps

Part 1 – Base Panels (Tunisian Crochet)

You will create four identical rectangular panels with 202 rows of Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS).

Step 1: Foundation Chain

  1. Attach yarn to the Tunisian/Afghan hook.
  2. Chain 38 loosely.
    • Tip: Work your chains loosely as you will crochet into the back bump of each chain, which is easier to access with loose stitches.
      Save

Step 2: Row 1 (Base Row)

  1. Turn your foundation chain to the wrong side.
  2. Insert the hook into the back horizontal bar of the second chain from your hook.
  3. Yo, pull up a loop and leave it on your hook. Continue this across all 37 chains.
    • At the end of this row, you should have 38 loops on your hook (1 loop per stitch).

Return Pass:

  1. Yo, pull through 1 loop (for the edge stitch).
  2. Continue with Yo, pull through 2 loops at a time until only 1 loop remains.
    Save

You’ve now completed the first row.

Step 3: Repeat Rows (Row 2-Row 202)

  1. For Row 2, Tunisian Simple Stitch begins with the vertical strands of yarn that form in the previous row:
    • Skip the edge stitch (loop already on your hook from the return pass).
    • Insert the hook behind the next vertical strand, yo, pull up a loop, and keep it on your hook.
    • Repeat across, leaving the loops on your hook.
  2. At the end of your forward pass of Row 2, complete the Return Pass:
    • Yo and pull through 1 loop.
    • Then, yo and pull through 2 loops at a time until 1 loop remains.
  3. Repeat Row 2 for 202 total rows. Mark every 50 rows to help track your progress.

Step 4: Finishing the Panel (Row 203)

To create a finished edge at the top, work the last row as follows:

  1. Insert the hook into the next vertical bar, yo, pull through both loops (this creates a single crochet-like finish).
  2. Repeat across all vertical strands at the top.
  3. Finish off with a slip stitch, fasten off, and secure the yarn.

Make 4 similar panels.

Part 2 – Cross-Stitching the Design

Step 1: Prepare the Design

  1. Review the cross-stitch chart available in the video description or as part of the purchasable PDF. Each vertical bar of the Tunisian crochet base corresponds to one square on the cross-stitch chart.
  2. For the Afghan, create two panels with dark green as the primary foliage color, and two with light green as the primary foliage color.

Step 2: Starting the Cross-Stitch

  1. Thread the yarn needle with the appropriate yarn color. Use a long strand but not so long that it tangles.
  2. Start your stitch by weaving the yarn into the back of the fabric. Work the cross-stitches over the two horizontal bars of each Tunisian stitch.
  3. Follow the chart and create the rose and foliage motifs.
  • Tip: Align your starting rosebud design carefully. Count squares on the chart to ensure consistent placement across panels.
    Save

Step 3: Complete the Design

Continue cross-stitching the entire motif onto the panel. Work with one color at a time to avoid excessive weaving.

Part 3 – Assembling the Afghan

  1. Joining Panels:
Align the four panels side by side. Join using a mattress stitch or single crochet seam in the Antique White yarn for an invisible or textured look.
  2. Adding Borders:
Use the H/5mm hook to create a border around the entire afghan:

    1. Work single crochet stitches evenly around.
    2. Adjust stitch counts on the corners to prevent curling.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve now completed the Summer Rose Afghan, a beautiful mix of Tunisian crochet and cross-stitch design. This project is a testament to the versatility of crochet and embroidery, giving you an afghan that is both visually stunning and cozy for any season.
