How To Crochet Rose Cardigan

This pattern describes how to create a crochet cardigan using two types of yarn: wool or cotton. The project is versatile as you can adjust the size by altering the foundation chain and stitch counts. The cardigan is constructed using shell stitches, single crochet, and half double crochet techniques, and includes instructions for shaping the chest, armholes, shoulder area, and neck. You'll also add buttonholes and finishing for the cardigan, making it perfect for medium, large, or extra-large sizes.

    • Wool: 500g (155 meters per ball).
    • Cotton: 600g (110 meters per ball).

Pattern Instructions

Front Side: Beginning the Pattern

  1. Foundation Chain:
    • Medium size: Chain 40.
    • Add 4 extra chains for larger sizes (Large = 44 chains, XL = 48 chains).
    • Chain an additional stitch for turning.
      Save
  2. Row 1:
    • Chain 1 (turning chain).
    • Starting in the second chain from the hook, work SC across the row.
    • Medium size: 40 SC.
    • Large: 44 SC.
    • XL: 48 SC.
  3. Row 2:
    • Chain 2 (counts as DC).
    • Chain 2 (separation).
    • Skip 3 stitches, create a shell (2 DC, chain 1, 2 DC) in the 4th stitch. Repeat pattern:
      • Chain 2, skip 3 stitches, make 1 DC.
      • Chain 2, skip 3 stitches, make the next shell.
    • Continue alternating shell and 1 DC until the end of the row.
  4. Row 3:
    • Repeat Row 2 (chain placement identical). Shells are worked into the shell below from Row 2.
      Save

Stitch Variation for Rows 4–5:

  1. For Rows 4 and 5, alternate shell positions:
    • Work 1 DC into the previous row’s shell.
    • Create shells into the previous row’s standalone DC.
    • Repeat this alternating pattern.
  2. After Row 5, the stitch sequence alternates every two rows:
    • Rows 2–3 layout → Rows 4–5 layout → Repeat.

Creating the Chest Area (20 Rows Total):

  1. Repeat the shell and DC pattern for 20 rows.
  2. Switch to a new stitch pattern:
    • Work Single Crochet (SC) and Half Double Crochet (HDC) alternately for 12 rows.
    • Example: Row 21 → SC. Row 22 → HDC. Continue this alternation for rows 21–32.
      Save

Armhole Shaping

  1. Row 33:
    • Skip the last 5 stitches for armhole shaping.
    • Begin working on the remaining 35 stitches for both front sides.
  2. Continue alternating rows of SC and HDC until Row 54.
    Save

Neck Shaping

  1. Row 55:
    • Skip 12 stitches at the center for neck opening.
    • Begin working from the 13th stitch and continue the next rows.
  2. Row 61:
    • Finish with single crochet all around the neck opening and cardigan edges.

Adding Buttonholes and Finishing

  1. For the right-hand side, create buttonholes:
    • Chain 2 and skip 1 stitch to form buttonholes.
    • Work single crochet into the surrounding stitches to finish the row.
    • Place holes with 7 stitches spacing between them.
  2. Add additional finishing rows of single crochet along the edges, ensuring smooth corners by working 3 SC into the corner stitches.
    Save

Conclusion

This pattern is suitable for different sizes (Medium, Large, XL) and can be adjusted by altering chain and stitch counts. The shell-stitch design creates a beautiful texture, while shaping the armholes, neck, and button holes makes it functional and wearable. This versatile design allows for customization based on yarn and size preferences.
