Making Your Crochet Shawl with Pocket

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Category 4 yarns. The video uses “I Love This Yarn Super Savings” in Citrus Punch and “Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek” in Pumpkin Spice, combining both yarns together.
  • Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm and 6mm hooks.
  • Yarn Needle (for weaving in ends and sewing on pockets).
  • Scissors.

Yarn Quantities:

  • Approximately 645 grams of yarn in total.
  • More than three and a half balls of Citrus Punch.
  • More than two balls of Pumpkin Spice.

Shawl Measurements (as per the video example):

  • Length (folded): A little more than 30 inches (76 cm).
  • Width: 16 inches (41 cm).
  • The total width (unfurled): 150 cm (59 inches).

Step by step Pattern

Ribbing (Shawl base):

Start with a slip knot and chain 13.
Turn your chains and start single crocheting from the second stitch from the hook, using the back bumps of the chains. This makes 12 single crochets (sc).
Chain 1 and turn, proceed to make back loop only single crochets for 135 rows or adjust the number of rows according to your preference. Make sure to end with an odd number of rows.

Transition to Main Body of Shawl:

Switch to the 6mm hook and another color yarn if desired. Use a stitch that accommodates for joining the yarn at the ribbing section’s end.
Begin working in a pattern referred to as the “trinity stitch”. This involves gathering loops along the rows on the side of the ribbing for the shawl’s main body. Work continues by inserting the hook in the side of the rows and performing trinity stitches until you reach the desired width of the shawl.
End this section by ensuring the last two rows are also completed with the trinity stitch for a neat edge.

Shawl Border and Pockets:

Return to using the 5.5mm hook for the borders. Work a row of single crochets around the shawl’s perimeter, adjusting hook size if necessary for the yarn used.
For creating pockets, start with 11 chains and form a base of 10 single crochets. Continue in back loop only single crochets for 25 rows, or adjust size as desired. The pockets are then added with the trinity stitch to match the shawl’s main body for about 18 rows. Measure your pockets to roughly 6 inches (15 cm) by 7.5 inches (19 cm).
Finish the pockets by sewing them onto the shawl at your desired position.

Finishing Touches:

Weave in all ends with a yarn needle for a neat finish.
Block your shawl if you prefer to give it a more defined and finished look.
