Pattern:

Starting Chain:

  • Ch 30 (for a different hat height, use any, even multiple)

Row 1:

  • Work (1 sc, 1 dc) in the second chain from the hook.
  • *Skip a chain, then work (1 sc, 1 dc) into the next chain. Repeat from * across until two chains remain.
  • Skip the next chain, then work a sc into the last chain.

Row 2:

  • Ch 1 and turn.
  • *Work (1 sc, 1 dc) into the first stitch (located in the center of the little “cluster” of stitches from the previous row). Repeat from * across into each stitch.
  • Work a sc into the last stitch of the row.
  • Repeat row 2 until your rectangle measures about 18 inches long from the starting edge. Adjust the number of rows accordingly for a different circumference.

Finishing:

  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail to close the hat’s top later. Turn the piece inside out, then whip stitch the two edges together.
  • Using the long tail, work a running stitch along the top edge of the hat, then draw tightly to close. Secure with a strong knot and weave in any loose ends. Turn the hat right side out.

Adding the Faux Fur Pom Pom:

  • Sew a button to the top of the hat using matching yarn.
  • Place the pom pom at the top and run its elastic loop into the hat. Loop the elastic around the button to hold it in place. This allows for the pom pom to be removed if necessary for washing.

Notes:

  • This pattern is versatile and can be adjusted in size easily by modifying the starting chain length and the number of rows worked.
  • The hat is a practical and chic accessory that can transition through seasons, highlighted by the luxurious touch of the faux fur pom pom.
