This colorful tote is brought to life using intricate granny square techniques, each square featuring four striking rounds to achieve its sunburst design. The squares are then seamlessly pieced together to form the base, sides, and body of the bag, resulting in a cohesive and durable finish. Its thoughtful design ensures strong fastening and minimal stretch, keeping the item long-lasting and user-friendly. With its detailed construction, this tote bag offers a simple yet impactful way to add personality and practicality to any wardrobe.

    • Change to pink yarn.

    • Work puff stitches into each double crochet from the previous round: (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through) x 3 into each stitch, then yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook, chain 1.
    • Slip stitch into the first puff stitch to close the round.
  3. Round 3:
    • Change to green yarn.
    • Chain 2.
    • Work double crochet four together (dc4tog) into each chain space from the previous round: (yarn over, insert hook into chain space, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) x 4, then yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on the hook, chain 1.
    • Slip stitch into the first dc4tog to close the round.
      Save
  4. Round 4:
    • Change to white yarn.
    • Chain 2.
    • First Class: Do 3 double crochets (dc) in the first chain space.
    • Second Class: 3 treble crochets (tr) in the next chain space:
      • Treble crochet (yarn over twice, insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops x 3)
    • Chain 2 and do another 3 treble crochets in the same space to form a corner.
    • Third Class: 3 dc in the next chain space.
    • Fourth Class: 3 half double crochets (hdc)
      • Half double crochet (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops)
    • Repeat this pattern (dc, tr, chain 2, dc) all around, making corners with treble crochets and chain 2.
    • Slip stitch to the first double crochet to close the round.
    • Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends.
      Save

Repeat this pattern to create a total of 13 squares with varying colors between the white rounds.

Connecting Squares:

  1. Lay out the squares in the desired pattern.
  2. Use a slip stitch to join the squares together:
    • Start at the top center and move down a row, then across the next.
    • Slip stitch through the chain spaces and the vs of each square so that all squares are connected without needing to cut the yarn often.
  3. Ensure the seams are right on the inside of the bag for a seamless look.
    Save

Adding the Strap:

  1. Create I-cords for the strap:
    • Start with a slip knot and chain 3.
    • Work an I-cord by pulling up loops: (1 loop on hook, pull up another loop from second chain, pull up the third loop from the starting chain).
    • Continue chain stitching right to the left.
      Save
    • Make about 40 cm or 16 inches long strap.

Repeat for a second, identical strap.

  1. Attach the straps to the top chain spaces of the granny squares.

Finishing:

  1. Weave in all loose ends through the stitches to secure them.
  2. Ensure all parts and pieces are sturdy.
