Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Medium weight yarn in your chosen colors (approx. 300g - suggested colors: blue and off-white)
- Crochet Hook: 4 mm (going down a size from the recommended 5mm to keep stitches tight)
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- dc: double crochet
Granny Square Pattern:
Start with a Slip Knot: Create a slip knot and ch 3.
- Form a Circle: Join with a sl st in the back loop of the first chain to form a circle. Insert a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark the center of your circle.
- First Cluster: Ch 4 (counts as your first dc + ch 1). This is the start of your first cluster. In the center circle, make 3 dc. This is your first cluster (3 dc).
- Corners: Ch 2 to form the corner.
- Second Cluster: Make another cluster of 3 dc into the center circle, followed by ch 2 for the corner. Repeat until you have 4 clusters and 4 corners.
- Join: To complete the round, sl st to join with the initial chain.
For color changes and additional rounds:
- For every new round, you change colors. Start in the opposite corner of the previous round’s ending point.
- Repeat the pattern of clusters and corners, adding clusters in the spaces between the corners as your granny square grows.
To Make the Hooded Scarf:
Crochet Granny Squares: Crochet at least 11-13 granny squares based on the pattern above; each granny square should be approximately 15x15 cm.
Joining Squares:
- For the hood: Sew 4 granny squares together, 1 on the top and 3 around the sides, using an invisible seam method.
- For the scarf: Sew the remaining granny squares into a long strip. The number of granny squares will determine the length of your scarf.
Assemble: Attach the long strip (scarf portion) to the bottom edge of the hood portion you've created.
- Border: To finish, add a border of single crochets all around the hooded scarf to clean up the edges and give it a polished look.
Notes:
- The fitting can be adjusted by altering the size of your granny squares.
- If desired for a more fitted hood (balaclava-style), test the fitting by placing a square on top of your head and one beside, aiming for them to reach your jawline for a snug fit.
