How To Crochet Baby Flip Flops

Materials:

  • Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in two colors (gray for the sole, pinkish coral for the straps)
  • Hook: F/5 (3.75mm) or appropriate size to achieve gauge
  • Sharp darning needle

Instructions:

Sole:

Start with the sole color (gray).

  1. Chain 11
  2. Round 1:
    • Single crochet 3 in the second chain from the hook.
    • Single crochet in the next 4 stitches.
    • Half double crochet in the next chain.
    • Double crochet in the next 3 chains.
    • In the last chain, work 7 double crochets.
    • Now working on the other side of the chain:
      • Double crochet in the next 3 chains.
      • Half double crochet in the next chain.
      • Single crochet in the next 4 chains.
    • Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
  3. Round 2:
    • Chain 1.
    • Single crochet 2 in the next 3 stitches.
    • Single crochet in the next 9 stitches.
    • Single crochet 2 in the next 5 stitches.
    • Single crochet in the next 9 stitches.
    • Join with a slip stitch.
      Save
  4. Round 3:
    • Chain 1.
    • Single crochet in the same stitch.
    • Single crochet in the next stitch, then increase in the next (single crochet 2 in the stitch), repeat this two more times.
    • Single crochet in the next 9 stitches.
    • Single crochet increase in the next stitch (work a total of 5 times like on the heel).
    • Single crochet in the next 9 stitches.
    • Join with a slip stitch.
  5. Fasten off the gray color.

Adding the Second Color (pinkish coral):

  1. Join the yarn with a slip stitch anywhere near the seam.
  2. Slip stitch in each around the entire sole.
    • Take care to avoid working a stitch in the join.
  3. Fasten off leaving a neat join.

Making the Flip-Flop Straps:

  1. Lay the sole flat and identify the middle.
  2. Count 8 stitches to the right from the middle and join your yarn.
  3. Chain 1, single crochet into the same stitch, single crochet in the next 2 stitches.
  4. Chain 8, then skip 9 stitches, and single crochet on the opposite side.
  5. Single crochet in the next 2 stitches.
  6. Chain 16, turn, make sure the chain is not twisted, and join it to the first single crochet.
  7. Next Round:
    • Chain 1.
    • Single crochet in the same stitch.
    • Single crochet in each chain around.
    • Slip stitch to the first stitch.
  8. Fasten off and weave in ends.
    Save

Making the Strap:

  1. With the sole color (gray), chain 11.
  2. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
  3. Turn, chain 1, half double crochet in each stitch.
  4. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Attaching the Strap:

  1. Using the long tails, sew the strap to the shoe, one side in front of the connection points.
  2. Use a running stitch, back and forth until secure.
  3. Repeat for the other side ensuring symmetry.

Attaching the Toe:

  1. Position the strap either with the gray or pinkish coral corresponding to the bottom or top (your preference).
  2. For the right flip-flop, work around the last stitch on the right of the middle double crochet cluster.
  3. For the left flip-flop, work around the stitch on the left of the middle cluster.
    Save
  4. Leave the strap loose, not tight.
  5. Secure with several stitches, tie a small knot, and optionally use a tiny dab of hot glue to secure ends.

Assembly:

  1. Weave in any remaining ends.
  2. Repeat for the other shoe, ensuring the mirrored placement of the toe strap.
